     The Stanley's were descended from Adam de Aldithley who accompanied William to Conqueror to England and whose descendants inherited land in Staffordshire and Derbyshire. The surname derived from Stoneley in Derbyshire. John Stanley supported Henry IV at the time of the rebellion of the marcher lord Edmund Mortimer in 1403 and he was knighted and rewarded with the fiefdom of Man, which had been taken from Henry Percy. In return, Sir John's family had to provide two falcons at the coronation of each king of England. He never visited Man but spent his remaining years as lieutenant of Ireland.³

     John was the first "king" of Man to visit the island since William de Montacute in 1341. He took interest in the island's affairs and brought order to the chaos by codifying the old laws, abolishing church sanctuary, abolishing trial by combat and introducing trial by jury, and ensuring there were clerks to the justices keeping records of all proceedings. His influence lasted for generations as it was not until 1507 that another Stanley visited the island.³

     Thomas was created Baron Stanley in 1456. He was leiutenant-governor of Ireland from 1432 to 1437 and later became a Member of Parliament for Lancashire, rising to Lord Chamberlain in 1455. He never visited Man but governed it through the administrators established by his father.⁴

     Thomas Stanley II was born circa 1435.² He married first Eleanor de Neville, daughter of Richard Neville and Alice de Montagu, after 10 May 1457.^2,3 He married second Margaret Beaufort, daughter of John Beaufort and Margaret Beauchamp, before November 1482.² Thomas died on 29 July 1504 in Lanthom, Lancashire, England.²
     

     Thomas never visited Man, but was one of the most prominent people in England in his day, mainly because of his remarkable ability for survival. Primarily a Lancastrian, and thus a supporter of Henry VI, he nevertheless was able to switch sides confortably to Edward IV, who made him chief justice of Chester, and back to Lancaster again with the restoration of Henry. He married Eleanor, sister of Warwick the King Maker, but survived the fall of the Earl. In 1482 he married Margaret Beaufort, the granddaughter of John of Gaunt and widow of Edmund Tudor. He thereby became the stepfather of Henry Tudor. His only fall from grace came in 1483 when the future Richard III accused him of plotting against him and he was imprisoned, but he survived the punishment meted out to many of Richard's opponents, was released in 1484 and appointed Constanble of England. He remained neutral at the battle of Bosworth (as he had on other occasions during the Wars of the Roses), but with his stepson's victory, Thomas found the crown on the battlefield and informally crowned Henry king. Thomas was made earl of Derby on 27 October 1485. He remained in the king's favor for the rest of his life though his brother, Sir William Stanley, became a supporter of the pretender Perkin Warbeck and was executed in 1495.⁴

     Thomas Stanley [III] was born circa 1483 in Knockin, Shropshire, England.² Conflicting evidence states that Thomas Stanley [III] was born circa 1481.³ He married Ann Hastings before 1503.⁴ Thomas died on 23 May 1521 in Colham Green, Middlesex, England.⁴ He was interred in Syon Monastery in Middlesex, England.⁴
     

     He succeeded his grandfather as earl of Derby and sovereign lord of Man since his father, George, had died the year before, believed poisoned at a banquet. In deference to Henry VII, Thomas, 2nd Earl of Derby, relinquished his title as king of Man and became lord on his accession in 1504, though he retained full sovereign powers in fief. He became involved in a dispute between the islanders and the Scots, suppressing the latter in 1507. The port of Derbyhaven was named after him. A valiant soldier he accompanied Henry VIII in his French wars and was at the battle of Spurs in 1513.³
