According to Blood Royal by T. Anna Leese some authorities question rather Agatha belongs to this family. It may have been Agatha who was first betrothed first to Harold, Earl of Wessex, and then to Alphonso, King of Gallicia. Douglas in William the Conqueror, pgs. 393-394, discusses the daughters of William the Conqueror and Matilda, adding that Ordericus Vitalis mentions five daughters, one being Agatha, who was betrothed to Harold Godwinson of Wessex and Alphonso of Spain and who died unmarried.3

Alfred the Great, King of England 871-899
Statue, Wantage, Oxfordshire
Alfred of England was born in 849 in Wantage, Berkshire, England.2 He married Ealhswith of Mercia, daughter of Aethelred Mucil of Gainsborough and Edburga of Mercia, in 868.3,2,4 Alfred died on 26 October 899 in England.3,2,4 He was interred in Hyde Abbey, Winchester Chathedral in London, England.5,4

Alfred was one of the outstanding figures of English history. Born in Wantage in southern England, Alfred was the youngest of five sons of King Ethelwulf. On the death of his brother Ethelred, Alfred became king. By early 878 the Danes had conquered much of his territory, but he then defeated them. By 886 he had captured the city of London, and soon afterward he was recognized as the king of all England. When the Danes invaded England again in 893, Alfred made his kingdom the rallying point for all Saxons, thus laying the foundation for the unification of England. Alfred was a patron of learning. He began a court school and invited British and foreign scholars, notably Welsh monk Asser and Irish-born philosopher and theologian John Scotus Erigena, to come there. Alfred's laws, the first promulgated in more than a century, were the first that made no distinction between the English and the Welsh peoples.6

Athelstan, King of Engand 924-940
Athelstan of England was born in 895.2 Athelstan died on 17 October 939 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.2 He was buried in Malmesbury Abbey.2

Athelstan was the first monarch to take the title of king of England. The grandson of King Alfred, he was crowned at Kingston-upon-Thames and seems to have possessed both great ambition and talent. It is supposed that his design was to unite, under his personal rule, the entire island of Britain. On the death of his brother-in-law Sihtric (reigned about 921-26), king of Northumbria, about 926, Athelstan took possession of his dominions. The other kings of the island submitted to him, in some instances voluntarily, and he styled himself Rex totius Britanniae (King of all Britain). A league, composed of Welsh, Scottish, and Danish allies, was formed against him. A fierce and decisive battle was fought (937) at Brunanburh, in which the allies were utterly defeated. After this the renown of Athelstan spread to the Continent. He exhibited a deep interest in the welfare of his people, improved the laws, and encouraged the translation of the Bible into the vernacular.3
