Contemporary drawing from a memoranda roll
Edward I of England was born on 17 June 1239 in Westminster in London, England.2,3 He married first Eleanor of Castile & Leon, daughter of Fernando III of Castile & Leon and Jeanne de Dammartin, in Las Huelgas, Castile, Spain, on 18 October 1254.2,4,5 He married second Marguerite of France, daughter of Philip III of France and Marie of Brabant, Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, England, on 10 September 1299.6,4 Edward died on 7 July 1307 in Burgh-on-Sands, Cumberland, England, at age 68.2,3 His body was interred on 27 October 1307 in London, England, in Westminster Abbey.2

Edward I was born in Westminster, the eldest son of King Henry III. Following his father's death in 1272, Edward was recognized as king by the English barons. In the first years of his reign, he suppressed corruption in the administration of justice, restricted the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical courts to church affairs, and eliminated the papacy's overlordship over England.

The major conflict in Edward's reign was an ongoing conflict with the people of Scotland. In agreeing to arbitrate among the claimants to the Scottish throne, Edward, in 1291, had required that he be recognized as overlord of Scotland. The Scots later repudiated him, and Edward invaded and conquered Scotland in 1296, declaring himself king of the realm. In 1298 he again invaded Scotland to suppress the revolt led by Sir William Wallace. However, he failed to crush Scottish opposition. In 1303 he again undertook the conquest of Scotland. Wallace was captured and executed in 1305, but a new revolt broke out, and Robert Bruce became king of Scotland. In 1307 Edward died while traveling to fight the Scots again.7

Edward II of England, King 1307-1327
Edward II of England was born on 25 April 1284 in Caernarvon Castle in Caernarvon, Caernarvonshire, Wales.2 He married Isabelle of France, daughter of Philip IV (I) of France and Jeanne I of Navarre, on 25 January 1308 in Boulogne Cathedral, Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France.3,2,4 Edward was murdered on 21 September 1327 in Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, England, at age 43.4 He was interred in Gloucester Cathedral in Gloucestershire, England.2

In 1301 he was proclaimed Prince of Wales, the first heir apparent in English history to bear that title. When Edward became king in 1307, the English nobles quarreled with his friend Piers Gaveston. In 1311 the barons, led by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, forced the king to create a committee of nobles, called the lords ordainers. They transferred the ruling power to themselves, excluded the commons and lower clergy from Parliament, and had Gaveston kidnapped and executed. In the meantime, Edward was at war with Scottish king Robert Bruce. After Edward's 1314 defeat, the Earl of Lancaster virtually ruled the kingdom for eight years. In 1322, with the help of the baron Hugh le Despenser, and his son, also Hugh le Despenser, Edward defeated Lancaster in battle. The le Despensers became de facto rulers of England. Edward's wife, Queen Isabella, wanted to depose the le Despensers, and she traveled to France and allied herself with some exiled English barons. In 1326 they raised an army and invaded England. Edward was imprisoned, forced to resign, and then murdered by his captors.5

Edward III of England was born circa July 1002 in Wessex, England.2 He married Edith of Wessex, daughter of Godwin of Wessex and Gytha Thorkelsdottir, on 23 January 1044/45 in Winchester Cathedral, England.3 Edward died without issue on 4 January 1065/66 in Westminster, Middlesex, England.3 He was interred on 7 January 1065/66 in Westminster Abbey in London, England.3

During most of the rule of the Danish kings of England who followed Canute II, Edward lived at the court of the dukes of Normandy. In 1041, Hardecanute invited Edward to England, and the following year Edward succeeded to the English throne, largely because of the support of Godwin, earl of Wessex. Edward married Godwin's daughter Edith. The marriage apparently never consummated, and popular tradition has ascribed this to Edward's piety or effetism. He was for all intents and purpose married to the church. Soon Edward gave his favor to the enemies of Godwin, who was harassed and for a brief time exiled. Perhaps because of Godwin's popularity in England, a reconciliation was effected about 1052. Godwin's son Harold, later Harold II of England, became one of Edward's advisers, and another son, Tostig, became his favorite. In 1055, Edward made Tostig earl of Northumbria, but the earl's rule was so oppressive that a rebellion broke out in 1065, and Edward was forced to exile him. Thereafter, Edward's health failed, and he was unable to attend the consecration of Westminster Abbey, which he had founded. He was succeeded by Harold II, the last Saxon king of England. Less than a century after his death, Edward was canonized.4,3

Edward the Elder was the son of King Alfred. He succeeded as king of the Angles and Saxons in 899, despite a rebellion led by his cousin Ethelwald with the support of the Danes of Northumbria and East Anglia. After a protracted struggle he defeated the Danes, and in 912, on the death of his brother-in-law Ethelred, alderman of Mercia, he annexed the cities of London and Oxford and their environs. The Danes submitted formally in 918, and soon thereafter the sovereignty of Edward was acknowledged by the North Welsh, the Scots, the Northumbrians, and the Welsh of Strathclyde. Edward was succeeded by his son Athelstan.5

Edwy of England was born circa 940 in Wessex, England.2 He married Elgiva of England, daughter of Aethelfrith of Wessex.3 Edwy died on 1 October 959.4

Edwy ascended to the throne at age 14 upon the death of Eadred, his uncle. Edwy succeeded to Wessex and his brother Edgar succeeded to Mercia and Northumbria, but as Edgar was almost two years Edwy's junior, his succession was held in abeyance until he was older. In effect the two kings, particularly Edwy, wer advised by a strong council which included Dunstan, the abbot of Glastonbury. Edyw's relationship with Dunstan started poorly -- apparently at his coronation Edwy disappeared from the council and was found consorting with a young lady -- and got worse. Edwy could not work with Dunstan and had him banished from England in 957. He married his childhood sweetheart, Elgiva, but this was annulled within a year on the gounds of consanguinity - they were third cousins. It suggests that the elders, particularly Oda, the archbishop of Canterbury, did not want Edwy to father children, perhaps because of the continuing problem of health or, more likely, because these would threaten his brother's right to the throne, and it seems that by 959 the elders were now firmly behind Edgar. Edwy died in October 959 at age eighteen, and it has usually been accepted that he died of the inherent family malady, but the growing opposition to him may suggest that he was helped on his way.5
