     Bertrade de Montfort was born circa 1060 in Montfort sur Risle, Eure, France.1 She married first Fulk IV d'Anjou, son of Geoffroy II of Gatinais and Ermengarde of Anjou, circa 1090 in France.1 Bertrade de Montfort was divorced from Fulk on 15 April 1092.1 She married second Philippe I of France, son of Henry I of France and Anna Jaroslavna, on 15 May 1092 in Ile de France, France.2,1 Bertrade died on 14 February 1117 in Fontevrault, Maine-et-Loire, France.1

     Bertrade deserted Fulk IV and married Philip I, King of France. Popes Urbain II and Pascal II considered this a "scandalous alliance" and excommunicated Philip. It was to no avail as Philip would not put Bertrade aside. In 1104, Philip received absolution for his marriage. It is reported that Bertrade attempted to arrange the death of Philip's son and heir, Louis, so that her son by Philip would be elevated to the throne. The attempts failed. Despite this, Philip apparently retained affection for Bertrada until his death in 1108. She retired to a convent and died in 1117.2
