Harald I of Norway was born in 860.2 He married Schwanhil de Eysteinsson, daughter of Eystein Ivarsson and Aseda Rognvaldsdotter.2 Harald I of Norway married Ragnhild Eriksdotter, daughter of Erik of Jutland.2,3 Harald I of Norway married Gyda ?.3 Harald died in 933.3
Harald was the first truly national ruler of Norway. After eight years of warring against other petty kings, Harald won a decisive victory at Hafrs Fjord. The traditionally accepted date for the battle is 872 although some historians feel it probably took place closer to the year 900. After the battle Harald was recognized as the undisputed king of all Norway. His rule lasted for more than sixty years. He accomplished in Norway what Charlemagne had done on the Continent and Alfred the Great did in England. The fractured jarldoms and petty kingdoms were melded together under one great sovereign, and Norway became a unified nation for the first time.
It was during Harald's reign that Rollo came to Normandy. The reason Rollo left Norway for France was probably because Harald chased him. When Rollo got to Normandy he conquered it and left a line of Vikings that became ancestors of William the Conqueror and the modern rulers of England.
In 912 Harald assembled a Thing and there publiclly gave his multitudinous sons the royal title and divided the kingdom among them. Generally each was sent to rule the part of Norway from which his mother had come. The result was that Norway once again became a fractured federation of small kingdoms. However, many of Harald's sons were required to submit to Erik, the favorite son, and the most royal since his mother was a genuine princess, as their overlord.3
