Edward of Woodstock1

#16626, b. 15 June 1330, d. 8 June 1376
Edward, the Black Prince
Effigy in Canterbury Cathedral
Edward of Woodstock was born on 15 June 1330 in Woodstock.2 He married Joan of Kent, daughter of Edmund of Woodstock and Margaret Wake, on 10 October 1361 in Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 Edward died on 8 June 1376 in Palace of Westminister at age 45.2 His body was interred in Canterbury Cathedral.2

He was called the Black Prince because of the black armor he wore or because of his temper. Sedgwick in The Black Prince, indicates that the name came about because of his "dreadful deeds in war" but adds that 'the name does not appear in recorded history until two hundred years after his death." Costain, The Three Edwards, reminds us that Edward wore black armor ("sable mail" -- a gift from his father) at the battle of Crécy and that he used black in his heraldic devices.2
