     Anna came to rule when his cousins Sigebert and Egric were killed in battle. He had probably not expected to rule and it seems likely he had planned to dedicate himself to the Church as he was renowned for his Christian devotion. He converted Cenwealh to Christianity and raised four daughters, all of whom became saints. The most famous was Æthelhryth or Atheldreda, who late in life founded the abbey of Ely. She married twice, the second time to Egfrith of Northumbria, but she retained her virginity. Her name lated developed in to Audrey. Her sister Athelburh became abbess of Faremoutiers-en Brie in France, while a third sister, Seaxburh, became the wife of Eorcenbert of Kent, founded the monastery of Minster-in-Sheppey and later became the abbess of Ely. Her daughter married Wulfhere of Mercia. Around the year 650 thre was another fierce Mercian attack on East Anglia and Anna was briefly expelled from the kingdom. At this time the Mercians destroyed one of the new monasteries, possibly Burgh Castle in Norfolk. Although Anna regained his kingdom he died in a third onslaught by the Mercians.2
