Mary Ford was born circa 1778 at Virginia.1 She married John Prewitt on 10 September 1805 at Madison Co., Kentucky.1 Mary died after 24 August 1851.1

Children of Mary and John:

Narrative

Mary was also known as Polly.

Larry Ford, in his publication on the Fords of Manakin Town2, indicates that much of the story of Mary (Polly) is made up from oral history from Ford descendants living in Madison Co., Kentucky and gathered by Jewel Roberts of Richmond, Kentucky, as well as written accounts from Tirey Ford's Tradition of the Ford Family and Genealogy of the Hill Family of Garrard and Madison Co., Kentucky.

According to these sources Polly was captured by Indians at the McKnitt's Defeat (see Peter Ford, Polly's father) in 1786 and returned to the family in 1803. She married first a Canadian Frenchman and second an Indian Chief, Little Turtle and had a son named John. After she returned to her family she married John Prewitt on 10 September 1805, her son taking the name John F. Prewitt.

Her sister Ann and cousin Elizabeth Maxey also were captured by the Indians. Ann escaped after a short time with the aid of a white man. No record of Elizabeth was found.

Polly was taken by unfriendly Indians who sold her to friendly Indians who took her to Vincennes in what is now Indiana, where she remained for seventeen years.

She returned to her people in Madison Co., Kentucky about 1803, with her Indian husband and child. When it was time for her to leave, her family locked her in the house and left her Indian husband outside where he stomped around for two days and then left.
