Children of William and Unknown:

Narrative

William is shown living in St. Paul's Parish in Hanover Co. in the 1790 census with 7 white and 14 blacks.

His Revoluntionary War pension application, Virginia, W.2718, 25 December 1832, 3states that he was born in Hanover County 20 Jan. 1755 according to the family register. He was drafted in 1779 as a private under Capt. John Stanley and marched through New Kent to Yorktown where he joined the army under Gen. Thomas Nelson. He was stationed there until discharged and served three months. His pension application reads as follows:

"He volunteered in 1779 and was commissioned a lieutenant under Capt. Thomas Richardson for the purpose of recruiting soldiers to march to the northern states. Before they had made a company, the scene of the war changed and the enemy came among them. He served four months as a recruiting lieutenant.

He was called out as a private in January 1780 under Capt. Thomas Richardson and Col. Nelson Anderson and marched through Henrico to Duval's Hill were he joined a regiment of regulars. While they were there Arnold was destroying Richmond by fire. They held a council as to the propriety of attacking the enemy at Richmond but before they got there they retreated. About four miles below Richmond they took seventeen prisoners. Just before they got to Malvern Hills they had a slight engagement with the enemy who finally took shipping at West Point. They marched through Charles City Court House where they saw a great deal of blood in the tavern occasioned by an attack made on the Americans a few days before. They then went by Holt's Forge to Williamsburg where they were stationed some time and were discharged. He served two months.

He was called out again in April 1781 and marched from Hanover County as a private under Capt. Bartlett Anderson and Col Samuel Meredith through Henrico to Farfield about the time Lord Cornwallis was passing through the country, then to Malvern Hills where he was stationed a short time. While there he saw an engagement on the other side of James River between the Americans and British. They marched back to Richmond and joined the army under Gen. Washington. He hired a substitute to serve out the remainder of the term. He had served until then one month.

He was called out the first of Dec. 1781 under Capt. Ambrose Lipscomb as private and was appointed 1st sergeant and marched from Hanover through Caroline, Spotsylvania and Culpeper and as far as Winchester to guard prisoners taken at the siege of York, who they were order to carry to Redstone. Before reaching there they received orders to carry them to Winchester.

He served seven months as private and four months as lieutenant. William could not furnish proof of his service as a lieutenant and relinquished his claim to a lieutenant's pension. He claimed a pension for seven months as a private.

On 26 August 1851, Edmund E. Bumpass applied for the pension due his deceased mother Elizabeth Bumpass. She died 22 October 1848 leaving only two children, himself and Overton N. Bumpass.

On 23 September 1851, Hanover Co., Va., the court certifies that William Bumpass died 7 June 1837 leaving a widow Elizabeth and two children Edmund E. and Overton N. Bumpass, and Thomas and William by a former wife. Elizabeth died in Hanover County 22 October 1848.

On 9 March 1796, Hanover County, Va., a marriage bond was issued to William Bumpass, widower, and Betsy Harris, spinster. Security, John Trevillain.

William Bumpass of Hanover Co., Va., private in the company of Capt. Richardson in the regiment of Col. Anderson in the Virginia line for eleven months, was placed on the Virginia pension roll at $36.66 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 12978 was issued 21 June 1833.

Betsey Bumpass, deceased, widow of William Bumpass, private in Virginia, was placed on the Richmond, Va., pension roll at $36.66 per annum under tha Act of 1848, to end 22 October 1848. Certificate 925 was issued 27 March 1852."

On 31 October 1832, William Bumpass testified to the service of Robert Pollard in tours in 1781 and 1782, for Pollard's pension application.4

     In the Hanover County Land Tax Records, William is recorded with 100 acres in 1787,5 1788,6 1789,7 1790,8 1792,9 1793,10 1794,11 1795,12 and 1796.13
