Children of Louis and Blanca:

Narrative

Louis VIII, son and successor of Philip II (Philip Augustus), was born in Paris. Before his succession he assisted his father in several campaigns to win control of French territories belonging to John, the Angevin, or Plantagenet, king of England. Philip II previously had conspired with John against John's brother, King Richard I of England, but later turned against him. In 1215 Louis was offered the crown of England by a group of barons in rebellion against King John; Louis led an expedition to England but was unsuccessful in claiming the throne; John died in the midst of the struggle and was succeeded by his son Henry III. The French invaders were excommunicated by the papal legate in England and were defeated in battle at Lincoln. Louis returned to France in 1217 and there took part in crusades against a dissident religious sect called the Albigenses, or Cathars. After succeeding his father as king, Louis continued Philip's policy of destroying the power of the Plantagenets in France and bringing under royal authority the provinces held by the Albigenses in the south of France. He was succeeded by his son Louis IX.6

Children of Louis and Margaret:

Narrative

Louis IX, called St. Louis was the son and successor of Louis VIII. Louis's mother, Blanche of Castile, daughter of Alfonso IX, king of Castile, was regent during his minority and again from 1248 until her death in 1252. During the latter years Louis was in the Holy Land on the Seventh Crusade (see Crusades: The Later Crusades). Louis and his forces were defeated and captured in Egypt in 1250, and the king remained in Palestine for four years before returning to France. In 1258 Louis signed the Treaty of Corbeil, relinquishing to the kingdom of Aragón all French claims to Barcelona and Roussillon, in return for which the Aragonese renounced their claims to parts of Provence and Languedoc. In 1259 he signed the Treaty of Paris, by which Henry III of England was confirmed in his possession of territories in southwestern France and Louis received the provinces of Anjou, Normandy, Poitou, Maine, and Touraine. In 1270 Louis embarked on another Crusade and died en route at Tunis in northern Africa. He was succeeded by his son Philip III. Louis, an outstanding monarch of medieval times, was canonized 11 August 1297, by Pope Boniface. His feast day is August 25.4

Children of Philip and Eirene:

Narrative

Philip was also known as Phillipp II von Hohenstauffen.

Philip was educated for the church; in about 1191 he became bishop of Würzburg but resigned his see in 1192. He was created duke of Tuscany in 1195 and duke of Swabia in 1196. Philip's election as emperor was opposed by a faction that supported Otto of Brunswick, later Holy Roman emperor as Otto IV. War between Otto's faction and Philip's faction ensued. Philip's victory was almost complete when he was murdered in 1208.6

The German king Philip of Swabia was murdered June 21, 1208 at Bamberg by Otto of Wittelsbach, 26, Bavaria's count palatine, to whom he had refused the hand of his eldest daughter Beatrix, 10. Otto has been at odds with Philip since 1198, he received overtures from many former supporters of Philip, and he was chosen king November 11 at Frankfurt. He was betrothed to Beatrix and received large concessions from the pope, who has earlier sided with Philip.7
