Narrative

Maria was the a great-grandniece of emperor Manuel I of Byzantium. Wikipedia the online encyclopedia, indicates that her parents were Ioannes Commenus and Maria Taronitissa but gives not futher information on the lineage that ties her to emperor Manuel. Genealogical Tables of Modern History places her as the daughter of Alexius Protosebastos who is a son of Andronicus a brother of emperor Manual. Are Ioannes Commenus and Alexius Protosebastos the same individual or is Ioannes another son of Andronicus or is Ioannes related to emperor Manual through another line? I have not been able to find information that clarifies this.
