Children of Rhys and Gwladys:

Child of Rhys and an unknown spouse:

Narrative

Rhys was one of the more memorable of the later rulers of Deheubarth and the last of any significance. He had a good claim to the throne being fifth in descent from Hywel Dda but he needed to prove himself against Caradog ap Gruffydd, his third cousin, also fifth in descend from Hywel Dda. Caradog mustered his forces in 1081 and press Rhys back to the coast, until Rhys was forced to seek refuge in the church of St. David's in Dyfed. Rhys combined forces with the exiled Gruffydd ap Cynan of Gwynedd and the two defeated and killed Caradog at the battle of Mynydd Carn. Later in 1081, William the Conquerer led an expidition into southern Wales. Ostensibly a visit to the shrine of St. David, William used it to free Norman prisoners isolated in various remote castles. William and Rhys met and agreed to a treaty where Rhys was allowed to rule in Deheubarth with any threat from the Normans provided he kept the peace and paid an annual tribute of forty pounds. This arrangement continued satisfactorily up to and beyond the death of William in 1087. In 1088, he was attacked by Madog ap Bleddyn and his brothers forcing him to seek refuge in Ireland. He soon raised the help of a Danish fleet with which he returned and defeated his enemies, killing Madog and his brother Rhiryd. In 1091 he was again challenged, this time from within his own kingdom when the nobility in Dyfed offered the crown to Gruffydd, son of Maredudd ab Owain, who had been killed in 1072. Gruffydd and his supporters met Rhys at the estuary of the river Towy where Rhys was the victor and Gruffydd was slain. In April 1093 Rhys became involved in a skirmish with the Normans at Aberhonddu in Brycheinoig where he was killed. After his death the Normans flooded into Morgannwg and Deheubarth and from this point the independence of Wales was gravely eroded.4

Louis VI of France was born late in 1081 at Herbst, France.2,3 He married first Lucienne de Rochefort in 1107.2 He married second Adelaide de Maureinne, daughter of Humbert II of Maurienne and Gisele of Burgandy, in 1115.2,3 Louis died Chateau Bethizy on 1 August 1137 at Paris, Seine, France.2,3 He was interred at St. Denis.3

Children of Louis and Adelaide:

Narrative

Louis VI, called The Fat, was the son and successor of Philip I; he was married to Adelaide of Savoy. Almost his entire reign was spent in subduing the robber barons, who preyed on the environs of Paris but were finally forced to yield to royal authority. For some 20 years during the period from 1109-1135, Louis waged war against Henry I, the Norman king of England, and against Henry's son-in-law, Holy Roman Emperor Henry V; he successfully repelled an invasion by Henry V in 1124. Louis greatly strengthed the royal power in France, granted benefactions to the church and privileges to towns, and became known as the protector of the peasants and as a fearless military leader. He was succeeded on the throne by his son Louis VII4.

Major Life Events

Mary of Blois was born circa 1131 at Blois, Loir-et-Cher, France.3 She married Matthew I of Alsace, son of Dietrich II von Lothringen and Sybil d'Anjou, before 1160.3 The marriage of Mary and Matthew I of Alsace was annulled in 1169/70.3 Mary died as Abbess of Ramsey on 25 July 1180.3 Her body was interred at the nunnery of St. Austrebert.4

Children of Mary and Matthew:

Narrative

Mary was also known as Maria.

Mary was a nun at Stratford, prioress at Lillechurch, and abbess of Rumsey (Romsey). She was used by Henry II as a political tool. Despite her vows which bound her to a life of perpetual virginity, the king had her taken from the monastary and married against her will to Matthew of Alsace. She found herself "the innocent object of execration to the whole Catholic world" and her marriage described as "execrable nuptials." Matthew was excommunicated, Mary was not being held faultless in the matter. Boulogne was placed under an interdict, which was followed by "an interdict of fire and water, by which anyone who assisted the earl in procuring even the ordinary necessaries of life was subjected to the same penalties as he himself had incurred." Matthew eventually allowed Mary to return to the cloister, and in 1169 she entered the Benedictine nunnery of St. Austrebert near Montreuil, where she remained until her death.5 Conflicting evidence states that Mary of Blois was born circa 1136.2

Children of Elizabeth and Ludwig:

Narrative

At the age of 14 Elizabeth married Louis IV, landgrave of Thuringia, and became devoted to ascetic practices and to charitable works. After the death of her husband, she was driven from Thuringia by her brother-in-law, who claimed that she was exhausting the revenues from her estates by giving alms. She found refuge for herself and her three children with her maternal uncle, the bishop of Bamberg. When the regency of Thuringia was restored to her, she accepted the inheritance of the landgraviate for her son but relinquished her own power as regent. Leaving her children, she joined the third order of St. Francis. She passed the rest of her life undergoing austerities and ministering to the sick. Credited with having performed miracles, she was canonized in 1235 by Pope Gregory IX. Her feast day is November 17.3
