Frederick's supporters and Frederick's son Conrad IV, who succeeded to the imperial throne in 1250, kept William in Holland for most of his supposed reign. After Conrad's death in 1254, William generally was recognized as king by the German princes. He died in battle against the Frisians.3

Children of Rudolph and Gertrude:

Narrative

Rudolf I was the first Habsburg to hold the royal title, and is considered the founder of the Habsburg dynasty. The elder son of Albert IV, count of Habsburg, Rudolf was born at Limburg im Breisgau. On his father's death he became lord of his family's territories in Alsace, Switzerland, and Swabia. His election as German king and emperor in 1273 marked the end of the Great Interregnum, a period of more than two decades when Germany was leaderless. Rudolf's claim to the imperial crown was contested by Alfonso X of Castile and Ottokar II of Bohemia. Alfonso was induced to withdraw by Pope Gregory X; in return, Rudolf renounced any claim to authority over Rome or the Papal States. In 1278 he defeated Ottokar with Hungarian aid at the Battle of Durnkurt, acquiring as a result Austria, Steiermark (Styria), Kärnten (Carinthia), and Carniola. These territories, previously held by the Bohemian king, became the center of the future Habsburg state.2
