Children of Hugh and Adelaide:

Narrative

Hugh Capet was the founder of the Capetian dynasty and son of Hugh the Great, count of Paris, whom he succeeded in 956. His lordship over many fiefs around Paris and Orléans made him the virtual ruler of France, and when King Louis V of France, the last of the Carolingian line, died without an heir in 987, Hugh's numerous vassals enabled him to win the election to the throne, defeating the Carolingian candidate, Charles, duke of Lorraine. Charles and many other great nobles of the realm attempted to resist his authority but, through force of arms and by judicious purchasing of allegiance, as well as through the support of the church, of which he was a devout member, Hugh established a measure of order within his kingdom. He had his son, Robert the Pious (later Robert II), elected and crowned his associate and successor in 988, thereby confirming the house of Capet, which ruled France until 1328.5

Narrative

Pepin the Short, was the mayor of the palace of Austrasia, king of the Franks, and the son of the Frankish ruler Charles Martel, and the grandson of Pepin of Herstal. He was mayor of the palace during the reign of Childeric III (reigned about 743-751), the last of the Merovingian dynasty. In 751, Pepin deposed Childeric and thus became the first king of the Carolingian dynasty. He was crowned by Pope Stephen II (III) in 754. When the pope was threatened by the Lombards of northern Italy, Pepin led an army that defeated them (754-55). He ceded to the pope territory that included Ravenna and other cities. This grant, called the Donation of Pepin, laid the foundation for the Papal States. Pepin enlarged his own kingdom by capturing Aquitaine, or Aquitania, in southwestern France. He was succeeded by his sons Carloman and Charlemagne as joint kings.4

Children of Charles and Rotrud:

Narrative

Conflicting evidence states that Charles Martel was born in 676 at Heristal, Liege, France.2

Charles was also known as Karl.

Charles Martel, Carolingian ruler of the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia (in present northeastern France and southwestern Germany). Charles, whose surname means "the hammer," was the son of Pepin of Herstal and the grandfather of Charlemagne. Pepin was mayor of the palace under the last kings of the Merovingian dynasty. When he died in 714, Charles, an illegitimate son, was imprisoned by his father's widow, but he escaped in 715 and was proclaimed mayor of the palace by the Austrasians. A war between Austrasia and the Frankish kingdom of Neustria (now part of France) followed, and at the end of it Charles became the undisputed ruler of all the Franks. Although he was engaged in wars against the Alamanni, Bavarians, and Saxons, his greatest achievements were against the Muslims from Spain, who invaded France in 732. Charles defeated them near Poitiers in a great battle in which the Muslim leader, Abd-ar-Rahman, the emir of Spain, was killed. The progress of Islam, which had filled all Christendom with alarm, was thus checked for a time. Charles drove the Muslims out of the Rhône valley in 739, when they had again advanced into France as far as Lyon, leaving them nothing of their possessions north of the Pyrenees beyond the Aude River. Charles died in Quierzy, on the Oise River, leaving the kingdom divided between his two sons, Carloman and Pepin the Short.5

Charles Martel died after dividing his realms between his elder son Carloman and younger son Pepin (or Pippin), although the country had had no true king since the death of Theodoric in 737. Lands to the east, including Austrasia, Alemannia, and Thuringia, went to Carloman along with suzerainty over Bavaria, while Pepin received Neustria, Burgundy, and Provence.6

Children of Philip and Jeanne:

Narrative

Philip IV is known for his conflict with the papacy. He was born in Fontainebleau. The great event of Philip's reign was his struggle with Pope Boniface VIII, which grew out of Philip's attempt to levy taxes against the clergy. Boniface forbade the clergy to pay taxes to a secular power and in 1302 issued the bull Unam Sanctam, a declaration of papal supremacy. Philip's partisans then imprisoned Boniface. The pope escaped but died soon afterward. In 1305 Philip obtained the election of one of his own adherents as pope, Clement V, and compelled him to reside in France. Thus began the so-called Babylonian Captivity of the papacy (1309-1377), during which the popes lived at Avignon and were subjected to French control. In 1307 Philip arrested Grand Master Jacques de Molay of the Knights Templars, and in 1312 he forced the pope to suppress the religious and military order. Their wealth was confiscated by the king, and many members were burned at the stake.5

Children of Edward and Philippa:

Narrative

Edward III (1312-1377), king of England (1327-1377), who initiated the long, drawn-out struggle with France called the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453). Edward was born at Windsor, the older son of King Edward II. He was proclaimed king after his father was forced to abdicate in 1327. Before Edward came of age, power resided with his mother, Isabella of France, and her lover, Roger de Mortimer. In 1330 the young king had Mortimer hanged and confined his mother to her home.

In 1333 Edward battled and defeated the Scots. In 1337 France came to Scotland's aid, and Edward declared war on France. The English armies had numerous successes, culminating in the Peace of Calais, which in 1360 gave England all of Aquitaine; in return, Edward renounced his claim to the French throne, which he had first made in 1328. In 1366 Edward renewed the war with France, disavowing the Peace of Calais. This time, however, the English armies were unsuccessful. After the truce of 1375, Edward retained few of his previously vast possessions in France. Edward was succeeded by his grandson, Richard II.6

John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, English soldier and statesman, the fourth son of King Edward III of England, and brother of Edward, the Black Prince. John was born in Ghent, now in Belgium. John of Gaunt played an important part in wars between England and France and between England and Spain. He helped the Black Prince to establish English rule over most of southern France during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453). In 1367 John defeated the army of Henry (later Henry II, King of Castile and León). John temporarily laid a claim to the throne of Castile. Together with Alice Perrers, his father's mistress, John dominated the English government. In 1377, on the accession of Richard II, John gave up his control of the government and thereafter played the role of peacemaker; he also supported the king, who made him Duke of Aquitaine in 1390.7
