Narrative

Thomas appears to have lived in Nansemond County or near the border of that county and Isle of Wight County. On February 6, 1667, he patented 179 acres in Isle of Wight and Nansemond Counties. Thomas and his wife Sarah of Isle of Wight County sold a parcel of land to in the Parish of Chuckatuck containing 179 acres by patent bearing date of February 6, 1667, to John Ison on May 29, 1678. Witnesses were Joseph Moody and Thomas Godwin. Thomas Exum and Edmund Godwin (son of Thomas) were witnesses to a deed of Henry Reeves of Rapahannock County to Thomas Godwin of Chuckatuck of 400 acres of land, part of a patent of 600 acres formerly granted Godfrey Hunt and by him conveyed to his deceased father Henry Reeves on the south side of Chuckatuck Creek called "Beaver Dam."

Thomas Exum was a Justice of the County Court in Isle of Wight County in 1692. He probably died in Nansemond County where the records were destroyed as there is no futher record of him in Isle of Wight.

Thomas Exum along with Thomas Wright bought land from John and Margaret Paine in Rappahannock County on 10 November 1656. Thomas Exum and wife Ann deeded this land to Capt. John Weir on 1 January 1660 for 6000 lbs. of Tobacco. The land consisted of 1000 acres on the north side of the Rappannock River and had originally been patented by Francis Hepps on 10 August 1650. John Payne patented 940 acres "lying upon the N. side of Pepetick Creek and a creek at the foot of certain white cliffs" which said land had been formerly granted to Francis Hopp 10 August 1650 and assigned to said Payne. Thomas Wright was a neighbor of Payne for on 25 November 1657, he patented 298 acres on the north side of the Rappahannock River and on the west side of Peptick Creek. John Payne also patented another track consisting of 653 acres on the north side of the Rappannock River "beginning at Miles end of land purchased of Francis Hobbs."

William Exum married Jane ? at Virginia.1 William died after 3 December 1701 at Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.1,2

Children of William and Jane:

Narrative

The following information is extracted from Historical Southern Families by John Bennett Boddie.2

William first appears 24 March 1663, when Walter Bunce conveys a servant to William Exum. In January 1667, Thomas Duke Jr. gives power to William Exum to receive cattle which belonged to his wife, Margaret (perhaps formerly the wife of John Payne.)

On 9 October 1667, William appears in Isle of Wight County where he served on a cornorer's jury which found that Edward Burgess died a natural death. He witnessed a power of attorney made by Wm. Bressie on 9 APril 1671.

Francis Hobbs, after selling his patent of 1000 acres on the Rappannock River to John Payne in 1653 (who sold part of said Tract to Thomas Exum) preceded William Exum to Isle of Wight County where he was known as Captain Francis Hobbs and represented Isle of Wight County in the House of Burgessess 1653-54. He probably never actually lived on the Rappannock but only was engaged in land speculation for on 18 January 1647, he sold to John Payne a plantation that he enjoyed by lease on the Nansemond River. John Payne was a nephew of Captain Francis Hobbs and was given a legacy in the Captain's will probated in 1688.

On 29 April 1679, William Exum, "planter of the Upper Parish of Isle of Wight" bought 300 acres from John and Mary Davis on the Main Swamp in Isle of Wight. On the 9th day of the 9th month in 1693 William Exum received a patent for the transportation of nine persons among whom were himself, Jane his wife, Francis his son, and Samuel Browne. This must have been for a return for had been in Virginia for some time. He and his wife Jane purchased the headrights of Richard Holeman for 1230 acres on 1 April 1702.
