Robert Wright

#19335, b. 3 February 1808

Major Life Events

Robert Wright was born on 3 February 1808 at Virginia.1,2,3,4,5 He married Sarah Byerly, daughter of Joseph Byerly [II] and Catherine Landis, on 29 August 1831.1

Children of Robert and Sarah:

Narrative

Robert's listing on the 1880 U. S. Census causes some confusion. First there is a daughter listed as Lyda Wright, married, age 44. This matches no known daughter or daughter-in-law. Was this Lydia who would be age 48 and married to John Young listed with the incorrect age and with her maiden name? Lydia was listed three weeks later in the household of her husband. Perhaps she was visiting her father on the day of enumeration.

Additionally, Jacob, James, and Robert are listed but with the incorrect ages.

Also his wife is listed as Sala (my interpretation, Gala is Ancestry.com's indexer interpretation) at age 68 about two years younger than she should be.

There is the possibility that this was not the correct Robert Wright. However, the names of the listed children appear to agree with his known children, his age is correct, and he is next door to a Daniel Wright who appears to be the Daniel that was his son.

Narrative

Jacob and Margaret lived near Byerly's mill in Berlington. Moyers (Myers) was appointed guardian.

John F. Byerly, Jr. in The Byerly Family of the Valley of Virginia indicates that Jacob married Isabell Thuma, daughter of John and Elizabeth Thurma. This is incorrect. Isabell (Isabella Thurma) married Jacob P. Byerly, son of Joseph Byerly III and Sarah Byerly.

Narrative

The home at Pleasant Valley on the "Byerly Place", as it is referred to, is still standing. It was built prior to the Civil War. The number of homes on this site, prior to the present one, is not known. It is unlikely that this is the original home, though this is possible.

The Colonial style two story home has large white columns on the front, eight fireplaces and four chimneys. The walls are three bricks thick and a number of windows are original. The name of one of the daughters is etched in one of the glass panes. The fireplace mantle in teh living room is done in marbled painting, which was fashionable in that time. It has a two-story porch on back.

The large round topped brick oven in the back of the house could bake 20 loaves of bread at one time. Recently, the present owners, the Koontz family, uncovered a brick wall, sunken through the years, that lead from the house to the oven.

The earliest of the Byerly graveyards is located across the road in front of the house on a rise overlooking the land in the original patents. The mill and distillery were located to the east and behind the house on Kirtesses Creek (now Pleasant Run).

The home was used as a field house by Union officers during the Civil War, according to a story related by Janice Lionberger Damiani of Plano, Texas, the great, great, granddaughter of Peter Jacob Byerly (grandson of the ancestor, Joseph Byerly) who was living in the house at the time.5

The picturesaque old railroad depot at Pleasant Valley, Virginia, near Harrisonburg, was build by Peter about 1860. The depot served both as the post office and freight station for Pleasant Valley until 1960. The building was at this location for the train that was operated over valley railroads between Harrisonburg and Staunton. The building still rests on land owned by the Chesapeake and Western Railroad Co.6

Children of Benjamin and Suzannah:

Narrative

John F. Byerly in "The Byerlys of the Virginia Valley" states that Benjamin's second wife may have been Polly S. Altaffer who is buried at Frieden's Church cemetery.

Benjamin lobbied for exemption in the Civil War for members of the Church of the Brethren. The relation between the Brethren and the state was complicated during the War by the fact that the Brethren in Virginia had to deal with both the State of Virginia and the Conference governments in Richmond. Many times they sent representatives. Among the representatives in 1863 were B. F. Moomaw and Benjamin F. Byerly. The Brethren Church was against slavery, and any members who refused to free slaves were excommunicated. Some resorted to the more desparate measure of fleeing from their homes to sanctuaries in the north and west. In March of 1862, prior to the exemption legislation of the Virginia Assembly, two groups heading west were captured. They were imprisoned in Richmond in the Castle Thunder prison. The leaders of the church sprang into action to intercede for these men in prison. The five hundred dollars, per head, plus two percent of all taxable property of each was raised. Benjamin Byerly and Christian Cline were sent to Richmond to secure the release of the Brethren imprisoned. Byerly was a Tunker (Church of the Brethren) leader. The 45 released prisoners travelled by train to Waynesboro and walked from there to their homes.5

Alexander G. R. Givins conveyed Benjamin Byerly on 27 April 1826, one hundred and eighty-four acres of land lying on the s.w. side of the Middle River in Augusta Co., Virginia. Benjamin built a two-story brick manson house facing west on it. Besides a basement and an attic, the house had two rooms and a central hall on each floor and three chimneys. In 1873 Benjamin added 69 acres, and on 10 May 1873, he conveyed his farm to his son, David Martin. On 2 April 1879 it was conveyed to Elisabeth Byerly. Lydia C. conveyed her interest to her sister, Martha Croushorn. The farm was sold 24 February 1921 to M. L. Wright for $36,673.54.6
