Narrative

St. Clair and Martha had eight children according to The Byerly Family of the Valley of Virginia. However, the 1900 U. S. Census indicates that Martha was a widow and had five children, all living. Five have been identified.

During the Civil War, the Byerly home at Pleasant Valley was almost burned by Union soldiers. Martha Jane remembered as a young girl, the Union soldiers coming to her father, Jacob Peter Byerly, and telling him to get his family out of the house because they were going to burn it. He did get his family out of the house, including a negro "nanny" who hid a five pound sack of Sugar under her skirt. The Byerlys had a husband and wife slave couple. Mr. Byerly then told the soldiers that he would no leave, but would watch the house burn. For some reason, the soldiers spared the house, and later used it as a field house for the Union officers. The slaves were freed by President Lincoln, but they decided to stay with the Byerlys. Martha also related the story that the Union officers took her pet duck and asked her to play a song on her concertina. She played "Dixie" and they gave her back her duck.8
