Narrative

     Conflicting evidence states that Martha Adella Bumpass was born in December 1817 at Tennessee.1

     Martha made a will on 17 October 1905 at Davidson Co., Tennessee. Will of Martha A. Grizzard:
I Martha A. Grizzard of Nashville Tennessee do hereby make and publish this my last will and testatment, hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time made. I. I desire that my executor, as soon after my death as practicable, shall sell all of the property, real personal and mixed of every kind and description (except wearing apparel), of which I may die seized and possessed, upon such terms as he may deem for the best interests of my estate. II. Out of the proceeds arising from the sale of said property as herein directed, it is my desire that all my just debts be first paid. III. I will and devise unto my daughter Mary E. Greer, wife of N. H. Greer of Loudoun, Tennessee the sum of Fifty Dollars ($50.00). IV. It is my will that the remainder of said estate be equallly divided between my five children, namely; the said Mary E. Greer, Ella N. Barr, wife of W. H. Barr of Seattle, Washington State, William Grizzard of Nashville, Tennessee, Edna Fletcher and Susan Goddard. But is my desire that the bequest to Ella N. Barr shall revert to my estate in the event that she should die before coming into possession of same. V. I have this day placed in the hands of W. H. Fletcher one hundred and fifty dollars ($150.00), and it is my will that the said W. H. Fletcher shall hold said sum as Trustee for my son William Grizzard, and on the death of William Grizzard, it is my desire that the said sum, or so much thereof that may be necessary, shall be expended in defraying his funeral expenses, any residue to be paid to his family. VI. I hereby appoint W. H. Fletcher of Nashville, Tennessee as the executor of this my last will and testament in witness whereof, I have signed and sealed and published and declared this instrument as my last will, done at Nashville, Tennessee October 17, 1905. The said Martha A Grizzard, at Nashville, Tennessee, on the said day of October 17, 1905 signed and sealed this instrument, and published and declared the same as and for her last will. And we, at her request, and in her presence, and in the presence of each other, have unto affixed our names as subscribing witnesses. Witnesses: Bettie Vaughn and J. E. Leach.11

     Will of Greenville D. Grizzard:
To those whom it may concern Be it known that G. D. Grizzard being of sound mind and impressed with the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do cause to be made and acknowledge this as my last will and testament to wit; After the expiration of sixty days from the date of my death I desire and direct that my executors shall sell if not sold before at public ___ to the highest bidder, and on terms that they may be amicably agree to be most advantageous the following property, house and lot No. 11, house and lot No. 13, and lot No. 12, all on College Street; and houses and lots No. 14 and 15 on Cherry Street and house and lot No. 26 onCherry and Coffee Streets; all the above be situated in the 13 District of Davidson County, Tennessee and in Wood's addition to Nashville. After ___ upon these sales and after paying all necessary expenses (line missing ) Seventy five dollars in cash and to divide the remainder in the following manner-first pay ($350.00) Three Hundred Fifth dollars to each of the following persons to wit: William T. Grizzard, my grandson Henry Smith, my granddaughter Gertrude Grizzard, Ella Barr, Dora Willard, Mollie Grier and the 2 children of heirs Edna Fletcher, Joe Gower and Lizzie Gardner (these two receiving their mother's share) A similar amount having been previously bestowed upon my Susan Goddard. The balance I desire and direct to be paid equally and in the same manner to the above heirs including Susan Goddard. For and in consideration of the love I bear for my wife Martha A. Grizzard, I hereby give and bequeath to her for life, lot and double house #36 lot and double house #37 and house on #35 Charlotte Pike Bosticks 2nd, Additon to Nashville the income of which property offers, paying taxes, insurance and all necessary repairs is to be hers solely, and at her death I desire the property herein be sold and after paying all necessary expenses be equally divided between the heirs above mentioned-Joe Gower and Lillie Gardner to receive one share between them. And last I hereby appoint my wife Martha A. Grizzard and J. B. Murray executors of this my last will and testament, and request them to scrupulously carry out its provisions. Since making the above will, Dora Willard, one of the legatees having died and the question having arisen as to whether there two children would receive her part of my estate as bequeathed above, I now wish to state that it is my wish to state that it is my will that the said two children shall receive their mother's interest as set out above. State of Tennessee Davidson County Court, November term 1894. A paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of G. D. Grizzard was presented in open court by E. S. McClure, David J. Page and S. E. Cox, J. T. Evins the subscribing witnesses thereto being first duly sworn depose and say that they became such at the request and in presence of the testator and they verily believe he was of sound and disposing mind and memory at the time of executing the same. It is therefore ordered that said paper writing be admitted to record as the last will and testament of G. D. Grizzard Deceased.11
