Children of Irene and Joseph:

Narrative

Irene was also known as Katie or Caty.

Irene was a fine Christian woman who had great influence on her family. Mr. Wade P. Kennedy, who boarded with the Ross family in Clintwood, Virginia for several years, wrote that she was a kind, patient and industrious woman, and states that she was known as 'Aunt Kate' by her neighbors. Bob Rutherford, her grandson, also wrote that she was better known as 'Katie Ross'. Rev. I. S. Ross in his lectures, "The Secret of Preventing Scandal and Disgrace Among Young Unmarried People", states "my mother had always been a good woman and powerful in prayer. It was doubtless through her prayers and tears that we were all brought into the church." And in his brochure describing and giving the story behind his song, "My Mother's Own Boy", he writes: "My mother was a devout Christian. None of her children for one moment ever doubted her piety." She died at her home in Clintwood, Virginia about 1895-6, about two years after her son, Rev. I. S. Ross, moved to Oklahoma. Amanda Carr's (one of her granddaughters) letter of August 18, 1958 - Quote - "Grandma was from a nice family. I remember some of her folks, but don't remember her parents' name, but I do know she was a Leonard before her marriage. Narrative

Robert served as a Private in Company C, 22nd Regiment, Virginia Calvary during the Civil War.

I'm concern about the supposedly marriage of Robert to Susan Jane Poff. This appears to be the same Susan Jane Poff that married his brother Rufus.

The only census record in which Robert can be found is the 1850 U. S. Census.
