Major Life Events

     Peter H. Leonard was born in February 1832 at Washington Co., Virginia.2,3,4,5 He married Mary Catherine Tillison on 12 February 1857 at Washington Co., Virginia.6 Peter died of a heart attack on 4 November 1916 at Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee, at age 84 while building chicken nest boxes at the home of his son, John Martin Leonard.7 His body was interred at Clear Branch Cemetery at Wallace, Washington Co., Virginia, with only a stone marking his grave.7

Narrative

     Conflicting evidence states that Peter H. Leonard was born circa 1836 at Virginia.1

     Peter enlisted in Company B, 63rd Virginia Regiment, Palmers Brigade, Steveson's Division, Buckners Corps, Army of Tennessee on April 5, 1862, at Abingdon, Virginia. At the battle of Kelly's Store in Southampton Co., Virginia, 30 January 1863, he was severly wounded. His brother, Samuel, was killed in this battle. Peter recovered from his wounds, rejoined his Regiment at Chickamauga, Georgia, where on September 20, 1863, he was taken prisoner and sent to the prison camp in Louisville, Kentucky. He later was transferred to Camp Morton, Indiana, which had very bad living conditions. After a year and a half of captivity, Peter was parolled for exchanged on 4 March 1865. Peter returned to his home in Black Hollow near Wallace, Washington County, Virginia, a short distance from his final resting place.

     Peter hewed the first shingles in Bristol, was a farmer, and had a blacksmith shop in Wallace.8

     Shirley Marie Leonard Fredrickson, a granddaughter of Peter's, ordered a Civil War grave stone from the Federal Government and placed it on his grave. She asked the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Virginia Division, William E. "Grumble" Jones Camp 850 to have a Civil War Ceremony, which was held October 4, 1998, with family and friends attending. Robert Utt, a Real Son of the Confederate Veterans attended - his father and grandfather both fought at Gettsburg, Virginia. Those attending were: Charlotte Carr's daughter, Susan, and her husband; Mack Leonard's wife, Marie Blaylock; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Carter; Betty and Charles Canter; members of Clear Branch Baptist Church; Preacher Leonard and Jane McCracken from the Lebanon Baptist Church; four Boohers; Robert Utt; Robert Utt, Jr. and his wife, Anne; Shirley and Bill Fredrickson; and members of the Jones Camp.8
