Major Life Events

Jean de Belcastel married Christine de Saunhac.1

Narrative

Jean was also known as [Chevalier] Jean de Belcastel Seigneur de Belcastel de la Pradelle.

Chateau Belcastel was repaired in 1040, and may have been built much earlier by the Belcastels. It was sold by Raimond Belcastel in 1251 to Hugues, Comte de Rodez. Also sold by Raimond to Hugues was the chateau and lands at Maleville, which had been purchased from Imbert de Cadoul. La Pradelle was acquired after 1353 from Beatrix de Gozun, and Colombiès came to the Belcastels about 1197. The family held on to these two properties until Jean III de Belcastle, Seigneur de la Pradelle was forced to sell them to Noble Antoine de Bernard, Seigneur d'Ortholez, and fled due to his participation on the side of the Calvinists (Huguenots) in the Wars of Religion.2

The direct line to these earlier Belcastels has not been established.

The Belcastel arms consist of a sable castle with silver on an azure background. This was quatered with the Montavaillant arms consisting of three gold Montvaillant lances with the marriage of Raymond de Belcastel, son of this Jean, to Jeanne Montvaillant.1

Chevalier Raymond de Belcastle was a Lieutenant commanding a company of men of arms for the King of France. He gave up his military command and service in Rouergue, and settled in the mountains of the Cévennes. During the time of "the Plague" in 1537 Raymond made a will in which he named his Catholic brothers, Antoine and Pierre, as tutors (guardians) of Raymond's minor children. However, the family was untouched by the Plague. All of his children were known to be Huguenots.2
