Joseph Henry Ross was born on 17 October 1832 at Virginia.1,2,3,4 He married first Irene Catherine Leonard, daughter of George Leonard and Elizabeth Johnson, in 1853 at Bristol, Washington Co., Virginia.1 He married second Unknown ?. Joseph died on 20 June 1910 at age 77.1

Children of Joseph and Irene:

Narrative

An Effie R. Ross appears as a sister-in-law on the 1920 U. S. Census in the household of James and Vadney (Ross) Vicars at age 20. This birth date is after the death of Joseph's wife Irene so it appears he remarried and had at least one more daughter. I have been unable to find Joseph or his family on the 1900 and 1910 U. S. Census.

Amanda Carr's (one of his granddaughters) letter of September 15, 1958 - "Grandpa was a cruel man. I saw him whip Uncle Shakey (William Gilbert, one of his sons), for one-half hour, and he was cruel to Grandma. When I was a child some of the Leonards would visit us - they lived in and around Rodgerville, Tennessee." Lillie Dotson's letter of August 14, 1958 says: "Seems like Grandpa didn't like my dad and never showed any kindness for us kids, but poor grandma would love us up and cry. Grandpa wasn't kind to her and I can remember how cruel he was to her." In a letter to W. S. Ross dated August 2, 1965, Eleanor Harr,(daughter of Florence Ross Alley, a daughter of Irene and Joseph) says - "Your great grandfather, Joe Ross, lived the last days of his life in Bristol, Washington County, Virginia. He died before we moved there. I was about twelve. From what I have heard my mother say, he was a crabbed, cross old man that no one liked very much. He treated grandma pretty bad, cruel, cross, sometimes downright mean. After grandma died, he treated his second wife lovely, bought her nice things. I remember how hurt mama was because he bought his second wife a watch, and her mother had always wanted one and he wouldn't get her one.CI:646:?3:CI]
