Narrative

     Conflicting evidence states that Lemuel Lawrence was born on 1 January 1744 at Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.1

     At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War Lemuel Lawrence was living at South Quay, Virginia. When the British moved into Nansemond Co., Virginia, he fled with his family and slaves to Northampton County, North Carolina. Here be bought 100 acres from Jesse Kirby and his wife Martha on November 4, 1780. On December 25, 1781, he purchased for 20£ 280 acres from William and Susannah futrell. September 6, 1797, he bought from Matthew Figures 680 acres of land joining James Washington, Benj. Cookley, Wm. Sherad, Barth. Figures and Thomas Figures excepting the town of Princeton. He bought 120 acres of land in Northampton County from Exum Liles on January 27, 1801.4 (see deed below)

     According to Joseph D. Lawrence Jr., Lemuel and his wife, Mary, had four sons and four daughters of which two have been identified.

     The following deed is recorded in Northampton County, North Carolina, Deed Book 1, page 527.7

State of North Carolina, Halifax District. this Indenture made, and executed this twenty seventh day of January, One Thousand, Eight Hundred & one, Between Exum Liles of Northampton County and State aforesaid, on the one part, and Lemuel Lawrence, Esq. of Northampton County, and State aforesaid, Witnesseith, That the said Exum Liles, for, and in consideration of the sum of One Hundred and Fourteen pounds Virginia currency, presently in hand, paid by the said Lemuel Lawrence, unto the said Exum Liles, the receipt whereof, the said Exum Liles, doth hereby acknowledge, himself, and is therewith contented and satisfied. hath bargained sold, and aassigned, and delivered, as he doth by these presents, bargain for, sell assign, and set over unto the said Lemuel Lawrence, his Executors, Administrators, Heirs, and assigns. One certain piece of land, laying and being in the County of Northampton County, the same which he Exum Liles bought of Edwin Liles, and the same contains one Hundred and twenty acres, be the same more or less. -Beginning at an oak on the road running down with the road, South seventy five degrees east two Hundred & two poles to a white oak, on the Cyprus Swamp, from thence to the first station, Containing as already observed. One Hundrec & twenty acres, be the same more or less.

To Have and to hold all the said lands, Woods, Wates, Water Courses, Mines, Minerals, Estate or quantity of Estate, right. Title, Privilege, or any benefit or profit in any wise appurtaining, or belonging unto him the said Lemuel Lawence, his Executors, Administrators, Heirs, and assigns, forever, to the only proper use and beoof of the said Lemuel Lawrence, his Executor, Administrators, Heirs and assigns, forever, and the said Exum Liles doth for himself, his Executors, administrators, Heirs and assigns forever promise 7 covenant to warrant and forever defend the above mentioned premises unto the said Lemuel Laurence, his Executors, Administrators, Heirs and assigns, against any claim of my own, or any of my Execu. Administrators, Heirs or assigns, or any one claim under me, or any one laying any lawful claim thereto. In Withess whereof I the said Exum Liles hath hereunto set my hand and seal this day and date above written.

     Lemuel made a will on 14 January 1809 at Northampton Co., North Carolina. Lemuel's will was recorded in the June Court 1811 in Northampton County, North Carolina. The will:8

In the name of God amen I Lemuel Laurence of Northampton County and State of North Carolina being in reasonable health and sound disposing mind and memory, thanks be given to Almighty God for the same, and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all flesh once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner & form following -

Impremis, first I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who give it to me, relying on the meritorious blood of my blessed Saviour to have full remission of all my lsins, and as to what worldly Estate it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with in this life I give and dispose of the same in manner & form following to wit. -

Item, I lend to my beloved wife Mary Laurence during her natural life the land and plantation I now live on and also four negroes vizt Jacob, Isham, Mary and Cate and also one half of the stock of all kinds at the plantation whereon I now live together with one half of my plantation utensils household & kitchen furniture -

Item, I lend to my beloved son Jonas Laurence, Moses, Jim, Nancy Young, Luke, Venus, and also Jacob, Isham and Cate after my wifes decease to him during his natural life and after his decease I give the said eight negroes to be equally divided amongst all his heirs lawfully begotten of his body to them & their heirs forever -

Item, I give unto my daughter Polly Cross wife of Jesse R. Cross three negroes, to wit, Jack, George and Dorcas and also negro woman Mary after my wifes decease I also give her the remaining half of my stock of all kinds household and kitchen furniture - plantation utensils to here & her heirs forever -

Item, I give to my daughter Polly Cross after my wifes decease all the land whereon I now live together with the above lent stock - to her & heirs forever. -

Item, I lend to my son in law Jesse R. Cross two negroes, to wit, David and Cherry till my Grandson Lem'l Laurence Cross arrives to lawful age or marrys then I give the said negroes say David and Cherry to my said Grandson Lem'l Laurence Cross to him & his heirs forever -

Item, It is my desire that none of my property should be sold to discharge any debt, but that my son Jonas Laurence and my son in law Jesse R. Cross should pay all my just debts between them equally. -

Item, Lastely I constitute my trusty friend John Pipkin my son Jonas Laurence and my son in law Jesse R.
