Children of Ivo and Gundred:

Child of Ivo and Lucy:

Narrative

Ivo was among the followers of William the Conquerer in his invasion of England in 1066. For his service he received the Barony of Kendal which consisted of a large portion of Northern Lancashire and Southern Westmorland. He also held the Barony of Lincolnshire and Norfolk.2

He possessed a large estate in Lincolnshire as Earl of Holland, and also in Westmoreland, which afterwards known as the Barony of Kendal. He held the manor of Morland and Kirby Lonsdale and Casterton. These lands were granted to him by William II Rufus in 1087 and included portions of the escheated fiefs of Roger de Poitou, Hereward the Wake, and Gospatric, the Earl of Northumberland, Sheriff of Lincoln.6

As often is the case in medieval genealogy there is conflicting information as to the parents of Ivo. Wikipedia, the online encyclopeida, indicates that he was the third son of Renfrid de Taillebois. Other sources indicate that he was the brother of Fulk, Count of Anjou, some say an illegitimate brother. Another source indicates that he is the son of Gilbert de Brienne or Gilbert Crispin de Bec, who are often confused with each other. For now I have indicated his parent as Renfrid de Taillebois as stated in Wikipedia.

Also in question is the succession of the Barony of Kendal. Some say that Eldred, the second Baron of Kendal, was the son of Ivo. Other sources indicate that the barony reverted to the throne on the death of Ivo, was given to the Mowbray family, and then was enfeoffed to Eldred. Some sources has a daughter of of Ivo as marrying Eldred which is what I have indicated.

"A History of Westmorland" by Richard Saul Ferguson, states "The Lancaster family derived their title to the barony of Kendal from Roger de Mowbray, in the reign of King Stephen, and he from his father, Nigel de Albini. They are both mentioned in a charter of Richard I to Gilbert FitzReinfrid as former possessers of the barony." The lifespan for Roger de Mowbray is given as 1119-1186. King Stephen's reign was 1135-1154. "Antiquary: A Magazine Devoted to the Study of the Past" indicates that "In 1106 Eltred de Tail-Bois was created Baron Kendal."7 These dates can't be reconciled. If Eldred became baron in 1106 and Roger de Mowbray was born in 1119 then he could not have received the barony from Roger de Mowbray. The web site "The de Lancaster Family" has an estimated birth date for Eldred as 1025 making him a contemporary of Ivo and which would make him 81 years old when he received the barony of Kendal. In trying to make sense of dates for this family I come up with an estimated birth date of perhaps as late as 1035. This would still make Eldred about 71 years old when he received the barony and would seem to indicate that he was a contemporary of Ivo, not his son.

The above it more likely a true account of the events. Through the de Lancaster family held portions of lands in the Kendale and Westmarieland (later the county of Westmorland) the entire barony did not fall to the family until after Gilbert FitzRenfrid married Helewise, the only daughter of William II de Lancaster and obtain her entire inheritance and was granted other lands by King Richard in 1189.8

It appears that the only offspring of Lucy and Ivo was a daughter Beatrix who perhaps marrid Eldred of Workington, who became Baron of Kendal. However, Lucy's inheritance passed to her sons by her second and third marriages and not to any son by her first marriage to Ivo.3

During the reign of William II (William Rufus) (1087-1100) Ivo gave to St. Mary's, York, the church of Kircabi in Kendale with its land.9

Child of Lucy and Ivo:

Child of Lucy and Roger:

Children of Lucy and Ranulf:

Narrative

Most indicate that Lucy was a daughter of Algar, son of Godiva, and sister and heiress of Edwin and Mocar. However, it appears that Lucy was the granddaughter of William Malet, daughter of Turold, Sheriff of Lincoln and a daughter of William Malet probably Beatrice as her second husband. This explains why the lordship of Spalding and other places in Lincolnshire were held after Ivo's death not by Beatrix his daughter but by the sons of Lucy's second and third marriages. Turold is listed in the Domesday Book as a benefactor of Crowland Abbey, to which he gave a parcel of land at Bucknall. The abbey also held land at Spalding that had probably been granted by Earl Algar and there is evidence that Turold the Sheriff gave futher land there to the abbey of St. Nicholas, Angers before 1079. Lucy and her first husband Ivo Taillebois subsequently founded, or perhaps re-founded, a priory at Spalding subject to St. Nicholas, Angers. A phrase fromt the Registry of Spalding Priory reads: 'mortuo quia dicto Thoraldo relicta sibi herede Lucia predicat' (at his death Turold left an heir, the aforesaid Lucy.) Intheir initial benefaction Ivo and Lucy referred to 'antecessorum suorum Turoldi scilicet uxorisque eius regine' (our 'ancestors' Turold and his wife.) The reference to Turold's wife indicates that some part of his landholding had come to hime through his wife, something also indicated by the occurance of William Malet amongst those how had held the Domesday lands of Lucy's first husband Ivo before him.6

Gruffydd ap Llywelyn was born circa 1011 at Rhuddlan, Flintshire, Wales.3,4 He married Edith of Mercia, daughter of Ælfgar of Mercia and Ælfgifu of Wessex, circa 1057.5 Gruffydd died on 5 August 1063.3

Children of Gruffydd and Edith:

Narrative

Gruffydd seized power in Gwynedd when Iago ab Idwal ab Meurig was murdered, and was generally welcomed by the populace who had enjoyed the reign of his father. In 1039 he won a decisive battle over the Mercians at Rhyd-y-Groes near Welshpool, where he slew Edwin, the brother of Earl Leofric of Mercia. This stopped the Saxon hostilities across the border for awhile. Gruffydd turned his attention to south Wales attacking Hywel ab Edwin of Deheubarth. After two resounding defeats Hywel recruited an army of Vikings from Ireland and there was a climatic battle at the estuary of the river Towy in 1044, where Hywel was slain. Gruffydd's victory was brief as within a few months he was challenged by Gruffydd ab Rhydderch, another of the descendants of Rhodri Mawr. For two years the battles continued and when warfare did not succeed, treachery was brought into play in 1047 when over 100 of Gruffydd ab Llywelyn's soldiers were slaughter through deceit on the part of Gruffydd ab Rhydderch's brothers. In revenge Gruffydd laid waste to parts of Dyfed and Seisyllwg. He also went into an alliance with Swein, the new earl of Mercia, in order to have Saxon support for his claim to Deheubarth. Even this did not succeed and for awhile Gruffydd ceased his campaigning in the south.

Gruffydd turned his attention to the eastern Marches, and sought to gain further lands beyond Offa's Dyke. He entered into an alliance with Alfgar, the son of Earl Leofric of Mercia taking advantage of the rivalry between Leofric's family and that of Earl Godwin of Wessex, whose son. Swein, Gruffydd's former ally, had been forced into exile in Byzantium. About this time Gruffydd married Alfgar's daughter, Eadgyth, who was about age 15. Alfgar and Gruffydd gained much territory along the Marches.

In 1055, Gruffydd at last had is victory over Gruffydd ab Rhydderch, whom he slew in battle, and thereafter claimed the kingdom of Deheubarth. In 1056, Leofgar, the bishop of Hereford, led an army against Gruffydd but was soundly defeated. By this time Gruffydd claimed sovereignty over all of Wales although it was a tenuous claim which could only be held by show of force and not as a ruler in the normal sense. The English respected his authority and, In 1057, after lengthy negotiations led by Harold Godwinson and Earl Leofric, an agreement was reached and Gruffydd swore his fealty to king Edward the Confessor.

After Alfgar died in 1062, Gruffydd became vulnerable and late in 1062, Harold Godwinson mounted a surprise attack on Gruffydd's court at Rhuddlan, destroying his fleet. Gruffydd escaped but was now a refugee. Harold, with is brother Tostig, mounted a combined attack on Wales in 1063, forcing the Welsh army into submission. Not only did Harold exact tribute and hostages but he demanded that teh Welsh abandon Gruffydd. Gruffydd's own men turned on him and he was slained by Cynan ap Iago in August 1063, his head sent to Harold as a sign of the victory.6
