Children of Gruffydd and an unknown spouse:

Narrative

Gruffydd was the longest reigning of all Welsh rulers. His father was in exile in Ireland when he was born and he was seventh in direct descent from Rhodi Mawr. His mother, Ragnhildr, was the daughter of Olaf, the son of Sitric III, king of Dublin. Gruffydd thus had mixed Celtic and Norse blood.

On the death of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn in 1075, Gruffydd challenged Trahern ap Caradog for the throne of Gwynedd. He had some initial success but eventually was forced to flee back to Ireland. His next opportunity came in 1081 when Rhys ap Tewdwr of Deheubarth was put to flight by his rivals. Rhys and Gruffydd joined forces to regain their respective thrones and were victorious at the battle of Mynydd Carn. Unfortunately, Gruffydd was soon captured by the Normans and imprisoned at Chester for at least ten, perhaps twelve years during which time the Normans established themselves firmly across north Wales, building castles at Bangor, Caernarvon and Aberlleiniog. When Gruffydd was given a conditional release he soon became involved in resistance, leading a rebellion against the Normans in 1094. For four years Gruffydd maintained an uneasy authority in Gwynedd, ensconced in his stronghold of Anglesey, but in 1098 the Normans, under William II, led a two-pronged attack from their castles in Chester and Shrewsbury. The Welsh were soundly defeated and gruffydd found himself trapped on Anglesey form which he eventually made his escape back to Ireland. He returned in the following year and reached an agreement with the Normans where he was allowed to rule Anglesey as a vassal king. Over the next few years, for good behavior, he was allowed to extend his lordship across the Conway into parts of old Gwynedd. While he was still alive, his sons contiued to extend their control over the lands so that by the time of his death in 1137, Gruffydd's Gwynedd was restored to its former self. During the height of his reign, from 1100 to around 1120, Gruffydd rebuild the pride and culture of the northern Welsh.4

Narrative

The inter-dynastic rivalries of the descendants of Rhodi Mawr continued after the death of Llywelyn ap Seisyll, when his distant cousin Iago ab Idwal, great-great grandson of Anarawd ap Rhodri reclaimed the throne of Gwynedd. It seems that his struggle for the throne lasted for perhaps ten years as he battled another claimant, Rhydderch ab Iestyn, who succeeded in gaining the throne of Deheubarth. Iago did not settle in Gwynedd until the death of Rhydderch in 1033, but his grip on the country was weak and after six years of inconsequential but oppressive rule, Iago's own men turned on him and he was murdered. His son Cynan sought refuge in Ireland where his son, Gruffydd ap Cynan, sailed to reclaim the throne nearly forty years later.2

Children of Idwal and Mereddon:

Narrative

Idwal inherited the pride of his father which was, ultimately, to be his undoing. Fiercely independent, Idwal was the most reluctant of the Welsh rulers who submitted to the English king Edward the Elder in 918, and though present at Athelstan's court several times over the next decade it was probably more out of necessity than desire. He was also present at the meeting called by Athelstan at Hereford in 926 where the river Wye was established as the border between England and South Wales. At this same meeting Athelstan exacted a huge annual tribute from the Welsh princes. Unlike his cousin Hywel, Dda, who saw the advantages of certain aspects of English life and used them to develope his own kingdom in Deheubarth, Idwal distanced himself from them. The final straw came in 934, when Idwal was forced to accompany Athelstan in his campaign against the Scots. Athelstan was pitting Celt against Celt, and though Celts ofter fought against each other in their own lands, it had not been at the instigation of the Saxon overlords, who were still regarded as invaders. Thereafter, Idwal bided his time and, after the death of Athelstan, took up arms against his young son Edmund. However, Edmund was no pushover, and although struggling to maintain his father's kingdom, Edmund succeeded in fight battles on several fronts and defeated Idwal who died in battle along with his son Elisedd. Two other sons, Iago and Ieuaf, were expelled, and the territory of Gwynedd passed to Hywel Dda.5

Children of Anarawd and an unknown spouse:

Narrative

Anarawd, as Rhodri's eldest son, inherited the greater part of his father's kingdom, namely the heartland of Gwynedd and Anglesey and the kingdom of Powys. There is indication that his brother, Merfyn, became at least sub-ruler of Powys. Another brother, Cadell, became ruler of Seisyllwg. They found strength by acting in unison rather than in opposition and thereby became the major force across Wales. In 880 or 881 Anarawd and his brothers gave the Mercians such a sound beating at the battle of conway that they treated it as revenge for the death of their father. Around 885, he entered into an alliance with the Danes of York, who had just established their kingdom under Gothfrith. This, however, backfired, as the Danes of East Anglia ravaged Gwynedd in 894. Anarawd then turned to Alfred the Great for help and Alfred apparently obliged although he insisted that Anarawd be re-confirmed as a Christian. The extent to which Alfred involved himself in Welsh affairs at a time when he needed to defend himself against Danish excursions, was probably limited. It is likely that Alfred, recognizing the military skill of Anarawd, entered into an alliance with him in opposition to the the Danes, and that when the Danes invaded Wales, Anarawd called upon Alfred's soldiers to help defend him and then, in turn, used those soldiers to try and conquer South Wales. Anarawd remainde master of his domain until his death.6

Children of Rhodri and Angharad:

Narrative

Rhodri was the first Welsh king to receive the epithet the Great. He succeeded to the kingdom of Gwynedd on the death of his father and to the kingdom of Powys on the abdication of his uncle, Cyngen ap Cadell. Through his marriage to Angharad he came to rule the territory of Seisyllwg. By the end of his rule Rhodri ruled the greater part of Wales, the most united under a single monarch since the days of Maelgwyn. His kingdom was under attack from the Danes to the west and the Saxons to the east. In 853 Burgred and Mercia combined forces with Athelwolf of Wessex in a major assult against the Welsh. Though they overran Powys, they were unable to defeat Rhodri and withdrew. In 855 the first Viking attack occurred on the coast of Anglesey. Rhodri marshalled his defences and, in the following year, he met a Danish fleet in battle and slew their leader, Gorm. The victory was celebrated not only in Wales but all across England and in Francia, which was also subject ot Danish attacks. The Danes continued to harry the coast of England and Ireland, and later returned to Dyfed in southern Wales, but left Anglesey alone for twenty years. Rhodri again faced an onslaught from the Mercians in 865, when Burgred invaded as far as Anglesey but had to withdraw because of the Viking threat to his own kingdom. Rhodri had a high degree of strategic skills and an ability to command considerable support and loyalty. Unfortunately his abilities let him down after a powerful reign of over thirty years when in 877 the Danes renewed their raids on Anglesey, this time from with a stronger power base in Dublin and the Western Isles. They succeeded in breaking through Rhodri's defences and he fled for safety into Ireland. He returned to Gwynedd the following year to face an onslaught from Ceolwulf II of Mercia, himself a vassal king of the Danes, and Rhodri died in battle.3

Trahern bounced back defeating Gruffydd at the battle of Bron yr Erw and sending him into exile in Ireland. He then took on Rhys ab Owain of Deheubarth and defeated him at the battle of Goodwick in 1078. Rhys died soon afterward. Rhys ap Tewdwr claimed succession to Deheubarth and Trahern failed to force his claim. Rhys was termporarily deposed by another pretender to the throne, Caradog ap Gruffydd, which force Rhys into exile. He met with Gruffydd ap Cynan and the two combined forces to invade Wales and reclaim their lands. At the climatic battle of Mynydd Carn in 1081 both Trahern and Caradog were killed.2

Narrative

When Owain ap Hywel stepped down about 984 he left the administration of Deheubarth in the hands of his two son, Maredudd. Maredudd began his reign with a devastating raid on Gwynedd, achieving what his father and uncles had never been able to do. He slew the king Cadwallon ap Ieuaf, and again united Gwynedd and Deheubarth. Maredudd was an able and skilled warrior and tactician. In 987, when the Vikings attacked Angelsey, Maredudd ensured the safety of refugees and paid for the return of hostages. He even allowed the Vikings to settle in part of Anglesey and evidently experience little trouble from them thereafter for he was able to use Viking forces for a punitive raid on Margannwg in 992. He took advantage of the new Saxon king, Athelred II and attacked Mercian encroachment into Wales driving the Saxons back across the recognized border. Unfortunately his strength was regularly challenged by domestic problems from his nephews Tewdwr, Edwin, and Cadell ab Einion who sought to gain some of Maredudd's souther territories for themselves. He had to rebuff onslaughts from them in 991 and 994, with Tewdwr being killed in 994.4

Deheubarth was inherited by the three sons of Hywel Dda, Owain, Rhodri, and Edwin. It was important for them to remain united as they were immediately under attach from Iago ab Idwal who was determined to regain Gwynedd and avenge the death of his father and regain his inheritance. They met in a battle at nant Carno in Arwystli, and the victory went to Iago and his brother, Ieuaf, and they reclaimed Gwynedd and Powys. Battles continued for three years with Iago usually proving stronger. By 954, Owain and his brother left the northern borders alone and in fact, Owain was soon on his own as his brothers died in 953 and 954. Owain ordered the organization of the Welsh chronicles and genealogies, tracing not only his paternal and maternal descent those of other dynasties. This work was complete about 977.

In 960, Owain led a punitive attack against the kingdom of Morgannwg. Border skirmishes continued and in 970, Owain's son, Einion, laid waste to the Gower peninsula which had been occupied by the men of Morgan hen. This tactic was repeated in 977. Owain's sons, Einion and Maredudd seemed more proficient as soldiers than their father. Einion was more prone to involvement in petty scraps, including a territorial dispute with Alfhere or Mercia who, supported by Hywel ap Ieuaf of Gwynedd, invaded Einion's lands in 983. It was a similar skirmish with the men of Gwent that led to Einion's death in the battle of Gower in 984. It may have been this event that prompted Owain to decide to step down as ruler and leave the administration in the hands of Maredudd, although Owain remained king in name until his death in 988.2

Children of Hywel and Elen:

Narrative

Conflicting evidence states that Hywel Dda ap Cadell was born circa 887 at Dynevor Castle, Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.3,4

Hywel is arguably the greatest of the Welsh rulers and certainly the only one to be called 'Good'. By the time of his death he ruled all of west Wales. He was given Dyfed by his father who conquered it in 905, deposing the last king Rhodri ap Hyfaidd. Hywel consolidated his rule in Dyfed my marrying Elen, the daughter of Llywarch ap Hyfaidd. When Hywel's father, Cadell, died in 909, Hywel's brother Clydog inherited Seisyllwg, but by all intents Hywel ruled Dyfed and Seisyllwg jointly with Clydog. After Clydog's death in 920, Hywel combined the two kingdoms to which he gave the new name of Deheubarth.

Hywel is recorded as a regular visitor to the courts of the kings of England. On some occasions, as in 918 and 927, these meetings were called by the Saxon kings in order to reaffirm their suzerainty and to seek fealty from the other rulers of Britain. On one occasion, in 934, Hywel had to prove his fealty by accompanying Athelstan in his punitive expedition against Constantine II of Scotland. On none of these occasions would Hywel have relished this subordination, but he was sensible enough to know that he had neither the need nor the strength of arms fo defeat the English and that he could benefit by working with them. This brought respect from the Enlish kings and a recognition of Hywel's authority. He took the opportunity to study how the English administration and jurisdiction worked and even named one of his sons with an English name, Edwin. He had the good sense to understand what worked well and could respect the English way of life. This was further amplified after his pilgrimage to Rome in 928. He recognized the benefits that could come to a well organized kingdom, which he had witnessed in France and Rome.

Hywel benefited from his association with the English. In 942 his cousin, Idwal ap Anarawd of Gwynedd, was killed in battle against the Saxons. His sons were expelled from the kingdom and the domination of the land passed to Hywel. He was now ruler of most of Wales with the exception of the south-east. He took the opportunity to organize and consolidate the many tribal laws of the land. He held a great conference around 945 at Ty Gwyn in Dyfed with representatives for every parish. It met for six weeks and provided the basis for a series of three law books which represented the respective laws of Gwynedd, Deheubarth, and Morgannwg. Hywel did more towards unifying teh Welsh as a nation than any other ruler had sought to achieve by conquest and domination. He was the first and only Welsh prince to issue his own coinage. He left a legacy that would long be remembered as the golden age in Welsh history.8

Narrative

Hyfaidd is one of hte kings of south Wales mentioned by Asser in his live of King Alfred. It seems that Hyfaidd, threatened by the sons of Rhodri the Great, sought help from Alfred the Great. Hyfaidd claimed the Demetian kingdom through his descent from Owain ap Maredudd, whose daughter was Hyfaidd's mother. The continued Viking threat would have led the Welsh princes and Alfred to unite against a common foe, and the increasing threat of Anarawd and his brothers (particularly Cadell) may have added to the need for an alliance.3
