Children of Vortigern and Severa:

Narrative

Vortigern is a title, not a name, and means "High King." It is possible that his real name was Vitalinus, or that was his father's name. He was probably the first post-Roman ruler to be declared High King of Britain. Tradition states he married a daughter of Magnus Maximus. For over twenty years, Vortigern led the organization and defense of Britain, some say in conjunction with Coel Hen of Northern Britain. He was probably the High King at the time of the visit of Germanus in 428 and 429, who came at the request of the British church to root out and destroy the followers of Pelagius. This was a time of continued civil war, famine, and raids from the Picts, Irish, and Saxons. In 449, Vortigern and his council of elders bought the help of Saxon mercenaries who had been displaced from their lands in Jutland. These mercenaries, under Hengest, helped the British to drive back the Picts, and in return, were given the Isle of Thanet in which to settle. Over the next five years the Saxon settlement grew in power and in 455 they rebelled. Later traditon states that Vortigern had become infatuated with Hengest's daughter Rowena, and had been giver her in marriage in exchange for more land. The British now feared the Saxon might and Vortimer, Vortigern's son, overthrew his father and embarked on a war with the Saxons. However, he was killed in battle (some say poisoned) and Vortigern returned to power, but was a much older man and unable to wield the authority he did in earlier years. Abourd 466 Ambrosius Aurelianus appears as a rival warlord and drove Vortigern into Wales where he remained a ruler around Powys.4

Children of Magnus and Helen:

Narrative

Magnus was also known as Macsen Wledig or Maximianus.

The period from 367 to 383 was an unsettling one in Britain which was increasingly subject to attacks from Germanic tribes and from Picts and Irish. With the death of the Roman duke, Fullofaudes, in 367, the emperor Valentinian sent an army into Britain under the command of Theodosius the Elder, a Spanish general. Magnus Maximus accomanied him. Within two year, Theodosius had brought matters under control and established a new administration. However, the British nobility now felt the poorer, and the strict rule of the young new emperor, Gratian, caused unrest in Britain. In 383 the Roman army in Britain declared Maximus emperor who had stayed on in Britain after Theodosius's campaign and had established himself with considerable authority and popularity. Within months of being declared emperor, Maximus raised an army and sailed to France where he engaged Gratian in battle outside Paris. After five days Gratian fled. Soldiers caught and killed him a Lyons on 25 August 383. Maximus was rapidly accepted as emperor in the West, a position acknowledge by Theodosius the Younger, emperor in the East. Maximus held his court at Trier on the Moselle.

Maximus was a popular emperor, a Christian, and highly regarded by the Church, though his strict Catholic outlook led him to ordering the death of heretics, particularly the Gnostic Priscillianists in Spain. By 386 he became increasingly certain that he needed to move into Italy which was nominally still under the control of the youth Valentinian II. By January 388, he was successfully installed in Rome. Now feeling under threat, Theodosius brought his better trained forces against Maximus who was eventually defeated and capture. Although Theodosius was prepared to be lenient, Maximus was killed by a group of soldiers on28 July 388. His son, Victor, whom he had made Caesar, was captured in Gaul and killed.4

Major Life Events

Children of Eudaf and Unknown:

Narrative

Eudaf was also known as Eudav or Octavius.

Geoffrey of Monmouth's unreliable History indicates that Octavius ruled in the middle of the fourth century. Welsh tradition has such a king at that time, Eudes or Eudav, who was known as the duke or warlord of Gewisse, and who was descended from Lucius. This may be the Octavius that Goeffrey refers mentions. Tradition indicates that he married a daughter of Carausius, a Roman commander of the Saxon Shore, and had at least four children. Helena or Elen married Magnus Maximus. His eldest son Erbin, seems to have ruled in Gwent. Another of his sons, Cynan, became ruler of Dumnonia, and Cynan grandson, Cynan Meriadoc, became the first king of Brittany. Eudaf is believed to descend from Coel, son of Cadfan and Gwladys. Gwladys was the daughter of Lucius.2

Brude I MacMaelcheon married Unknown ?, daughter of Gildas.2

Child of Brude and Unknown:

Narrative

It was traditional amongst the Picts to elect their king from within a select aristocracy who were sons of Pictish princesses. Brude, however is generally acknowledged to have been the son of Maelgwyn, the ruler of Gwynedd. If this is true, then it is clear that Maelgwyn must have married a Pictish princess, which gave Brude his authority, but it also meant that Brude brought with him considerable strength. Maelgwyn was regarded as the most powerful ruler in Britain and his son, Rhun, continued to enforce that authority. Brude shared his kingdom with his predecessor, Galam, but after a year Galam was deposed. It is possible that Brude's position was strengthen when his half-brother, Rhun, marched on the north to seed revenge for the raid on Anglesey by Elidyr of Rheged, who was assisted by Clytno of the Goddodin. Rhun's army marched to the very shores of the Forth and it is possible that one of the results of this was the deposing of Galam. Rhun's army may also have assisted Brude in his fight against the Dál Riatans. Within two years of his reign Brude successfully defeated Gabhrán and drove the Scots back into their kingdom.

Brude dominated the Picts by his strength of character and his wisdom. He could claim descent from Christians but it is unlikely that he was a practicing Christian himself, merely sympathetic to the faith. The Picts were pagans steeped in their centuries-old druidic culture. St. Columba used this oppurtunity of Brude's sympathies, however, to help convert the Picts to Christianity. In 565 Columba travelled across northern Pictland to Brude's capital at Inverness.

Brude ruled the Picts for nearly thirty years and proved one of their most powerful and gifted kings. He maintained peace during a period of otherwise significant hostilities to the south, and was acknowledge as the sole ruler not only by all of the Pictish chieftains on the mainland, but those amongst the Orkneys and the Western Isles.3

Narrative

Galam is believed to be a cousin of Dumnagual, originally called Caw, great grandson of Ceretic and briefly king of Strathclyde before he abdicated to assume the Pictish kingship (probably under pressure from Dumnagual). He apparently was very religious and was probably deposed becaused of his religious view by Drest mac Girom. He subsequently settled in Anglesey.2

Galam was also known as Galanan Erilich or Caw.
