According to conflicting evidence, he married Nancy Milburn on 30 May 1849 at Monroe Co., Virginia.1

Major Life Events

Evan Hinton was born on 8 August 1821 at Monroe Co., Virginia.1,2 He married Nancy Milburn on 3 May 1849.3 Evan died on 27 April 1897 at Hinton, Summers Co., West Virginia, at age 75.1

Children of Evan and Nancy:

Narrative

Evan was known as the "Father of Summers Co., West Virginia." At some time after the formation in 1871, Evan served as the Sheriff of Summers County.

On page 535 of "History of Summers County, West Virginia," published in 1907, there is a story of a legendary fight between Evan Hinton and William C. Richmond:
"William C. Richmond was a son of Samuel Richmond, raised at Richmond Falls, and was a man of tremendous physical power. Evan Hinton, the 'Father of the County,' son of Jack (John) Hinton, was also a man of great physical strength; Richmond being a large-bond, tall, sinewy man, while Hinton was short, active and muscular.
"Before the war, it was very fashionable for the young men of the county to have wrestling matches, which very frequently ended in fights, as a test of manhood. Some of the neighbors of these gentlemen, desiring to see a contest of their strength, told Evan Hinton that 'Bill' Richmond had stated that he 'could whip "Jack" Hinton and all of his boys,' for the purpose of inciting a fight for the amusement of the neighborhood. Evan immediately wrote to Richmond what he had heard, telling him if it was true to meet him, with his friends, at the farm just opposite Tug Creek, across New River, on the Raleigh side, below Hinton and he 'would show him whether he could whip "Jack" Hinton and all of his boys.' Richmond replied that he would be on hand.
"On the day appointed Richmond was on the grounds bright and early with his friends, and Hinton was there with his friends. They had each other searched for dangerous weapons, and, none having been found, they stripped for a fray. Richmond was more judicious than Hinton, having put on a rotten shirt, so that when Hinton grappled it his holds would break. Hinton having put on a shirt of strong make, and they went at it. It was about an equal showdown, sometimes one being down and the other on top, and so back and forth, until finally Richmond got Hinton down and got on top of him and had him in very bad shape, until Hinton managed to get Richmond's finger in his mouth. John Hinton said to Evan, 'Come out from under there, Evan,' and the friends of Richmond were encouraging him likewise to hold him down while he had him; Hinton having the finger of Richmond in his mouth, biting it with all his power, the pain became so severe that Richmond could stand it no longer, and cried 'Enough.' Leftwich Barker, a brother-in-law of Hinton's, told Richmond he would have to "holler" louder; that wouldn't do; so Richmond yelled 'Enough!" The parties then separated and the fight ended.
"While Hinton was the victor, his punishment was possibly more severe than Richmond's. He became violently sick and suffered very severely. After the fight was over the young men shook hands, and there was no more of it from that day until the death of each, they being neighbors and friends until their deaths, both living to be very aged men. This fight was celebrated throughout the country, and is frequently referred to by the older citizens, Evan Hinton and William Richmond having both detailed the facts to the writer years ago. Richmond was afterwards a Union soldier and Hinton a confederate soldier. Richmond was known throughout the country as 'Devil Bill' Richmond. He was afterwards a member of the legislature from Raleigh County, justice of the peace, and high in the councils of the Republican Party, while Evan Hinton became the sheriff and the 'Father of Summers County.'
"Richmond was arrested at one time by the Confederate bushwhackers, or scouts, and was taken on horseback behind one of the soldiers. In traveling through the mounts after night, he, desiring to make his escape, being astride the horse, holding on to the man in front, who held the bridle, took out his knife and deliberately cut the man's throat from the rear, slid off his horse and escaped. The man whose throat was cut, however, fortunately did not die from the wounds.
To show the fighting proclivity of the young men in those days, we give another instance of Evan Hinton and his father. They were driving hogs through the country and met with another party, and when they came in sight, 'Jack' Hinton, Evan's father, told Evan that they would have to thrash those people; so when they got together, Evan, after a hard-fought battle, captured his man, after considerable worry and distress, and on happening to think of his father, he looked back to see if he needed any assistance; but the old gentleman had already thrashed his opponent, and was sitting on the bank of the road watching Evan complete the job. This story is not given in detail, and is quite an interesting yarn, but it has been so long since its recitation to the writer than he has forgotten it, and is unable to give it in its interesting details."3 Evan Hinton was New Tag An obituary notice for Evan Hinton was republished by Mr. Frederick Long in "The Hinton News" on June 12, 1980. That brief obituary notice may be transcribed as follows:

"Mr. Evan Hinton, one of the most exemplary and prominent citizens of Summers Co died of paralysis at his home near Hinton on Friday April 2, 1897, aged 74 years. Mr. Hinton was appointed Sheriff of Summers County by Judge J. M. McWhorter when the county was first formed, and was elected to succeed himself, serving six years in all He was a brother of Mr. Peter Hinton and Mrs. Robert Skaggs of this county. Deceased was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for many years."3

Narrative

Conflicting evidence states that John Hinton Jr. was born in May 1828.2

"History of Summers County, West Virginia," published in 1907, and copied for compiler (John A. Callarman) by the late Donnadeane (Depew) Reame, carried this profile of John Hinton:

"This gentleman resides two and one-half miles from the court house, on Madam's Creek. He is a son of Captain John Hinton. His father at one time owned the land on which the city of Avis is now built. He was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, his wife being a Maddy, from Greenville in Monroe County, a daughter of John Maddy. He had been in the habit of coming to the mouth of the Greenbrier River during his boyhood, with his father, John Hinton, on hunting excursions, and when he was about ten years of age, his father purchased the Henry and Isaac Ballangee land at the mouth of the Greenbrier River at Avis.
"The only child of John Hinton is his son, John Wayne Hinton, a valued citizen of Jumping Branch District, a farmer. He lives adjoining his cousin, Silas R. Hinton, a son of Evan. John Hinton was one of the sureties on the first sheriff's bond ever executed in the county, that of his brother, Evan. He can tell of many of the pioneer reminiscences, and the way things were done in this then wilderness in his boyhood days. The Hintons are loyal Democrats in party faith, and Missionary Baptists in their religious faith.
"He says merchandise in those days was shipped to the immediate region around where Hinton is now located and the upper end of the county from Lynchburg and Richmond overland. At the time Mr. Hinton moved to the mouth of the Greenbrier, there were no roads — nothing but bridle paths — and there were plenty of deer, wild turkeys and bear in the woods. The Avis Hinton property was bought by his father from Henry Ballangee. There was no church then nearer Hinton than Alderson, twenty-one miles. The pioneer preachers were beginning to come into the region, however, and were permitted to preach at the private residences of the farmers.
"There were no schools or school houses. Mr. Hinton remembers John Rollyson, one of the foremost teachers in those times. Robert Commack was an old teacher, but his day was about 1860, following the war. Green Lively was a captain of militia and Wilson Lively the colonel. Colonel Wilson Lively lived at the old Graham house, now resided in by Bun Kesler, at Lowell, until his death during the war, being a brave Confederate soldier. He was the father of our townsman, Frank Lively, the lawyer. There was no post office nearer than Union, a distance of twenty-five miles.
"John Hinton was mustered into the service of the Confederate Army at the mouth of Big Bluestone. In the days of the militia, Evan Hinton, the brother of John, was a captain and the place of muster was at Jumping Jack. Lewis Upton was orderly sergeant. Soon after the declaration of war, Mr. Hinton volunteered and joined the company of Captain Philip Thurmond, and was attached to General John Echol's brigade. John Hinton was one of the pioneers, a man of strict honor and integrity.
"He suffered much financially, by reason of his being one of the bondsmen of his brother, Evan Hinton, the first sheriff of Summers County. John Wayne Hinton is his only son, and he and his father reside together. He was an early neighbor of the Foxes, who lived at the place where Brooks post office is now located, which is at the mouth of Brooks Creek, four miles west of Hinton, was originally settled by Mr. Brooks, who sold out his possessions at that place to David Fox, who died several years ago. David Fox owned the farm at the mouth of Brooks Creek, on which the little village of Brooks is now located, as well as the post office, there being two stores there at this time, owned by R. Meadows and James Samples, and half a dozen houses.
"The brother of David Fox, Samuel, resided about a mile above Brooks, at what is now known as Barksdale, where he died during the war, leaving several daughters, who still reside on the premises, and one son, George, who resides in Greenbrier County, at Dawson. David Fox was the father of Charles R., Samuel H. and James H., who all reside at Brooks Postoffice, who are each thrifty, well-to-do and prosperous farmers, each having money in bank and owe no debts. They are noted for being the possessors of fine horse-flesh. Joseph is now living in parts unknown, having emigrated to Parkersburg, in this State, and afterwards going to parts unknown, having failed in business."3

The history above indicates that John had one child, John Wayne. The 1900 U. S. Census indicates that John and Adaline had 4 children of which only one, John Wayne, was living. The 1870 and 1880 U. S. Census show a daughter, Sarah A., who was born about 1866. I suspect that the other two children probably were born and died somewhere between John Wayne who was born in May 1849 and this Sarah.

Children of William and Hannah:

Narrative

A Mary appears as wife at age 45 on the 1880 U. S. Census in the household of William Carpenter. William appears at age 60 which is incorrect as his age should be 68. The children listed in the household appear to be the youngest three children of William and Hannah, Thomas, Edward, and Delia, with the correct ages. Is Mary a third wife for William? If so, where is Hannah? She does not die until 1906 and appears as a widow in the 1900 U. S. Census in the household of her son Edward. Could Mary actually be Hannah? The age for Mary is nine years younger than what should be the age for Hannah. Also, a close look at the relationship column on the 1880 Census looks like the relationship appears to have been written as daughter and overwritten as wife, or vice versa. Could Mary be a daughter? The age 45 if correct would indicate that she was born in 1835, two years before the the first marriage of William to Phoebe Henton.

James K. Polk Earman1

#47932, b. 9 June 1845, d. 22 August 1916

Major Life Events

James K. Polk Earman was born on 9 June 1845 at Virginia.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 He married Margaret E. Carpenter, daughter of William Warner Carpenter and Phoebe Henton, on 12 August 1869.1 James died on 22 August 1916 at Rockingham Co., Virginia, at age 71.1,8 He was interred at Keezletown Cemetery at Rockingham Co., Virginia.8

Narrative

Sources normally identify Margaret Ditman as the mother of James K. Polk Earman. However, in examining census records for the family from 1850 to 1880 there is no Margaret listed in the household. There is a Savilla listed at age 27, 12 years younger than Samuel, in the 1850 to 1870 Census and in the 1880 Census as mother in the household of G. N. (George) on of the children of Samuel. In the 1850 Census there are children listed at ages 18, 14, 12, 4, 3, 2, and 7/12 which leads me to believe that Samuel probably had two wifes, the first being Margaret Ditman which has been indentified by other researchers and who is probably the mother of the first three children listed on the 1850 Census, and the second wife being Savilla who is the mother of the remaining children including James K. Polk Earman.

Children of Hannah and William:

Narrative

Conflicting evidence states that Hannah Henton was born circa 1817.1

John Callarman has made the following analysis as to the parents of Hannah and this reseacher agrees with his analysis. "An assumption had been made by early Henton genealogists that Hannah Henton was a sister of William Warner Carpenter's first wife, Phoebe Henton, but for several solid reasons, Deb Wake believes she was a daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth (Sellers) Henton, and compiler (John Callarman) accepts that belief.
"Her obituary, Deb Wake reported, shows that she was born March 29, 1826, at Powell's Fort Valley, Shenandoah County, Virginia, which does not match the geographical area where Phoebe's parents, Evan and Margaret (Burnsides) Henton lived.
"The marriage bond for William Warner Carpenter and Hannah Henton is dated October 31, 1849, and is signed by W.W. Carpenter and Silim Sellers. Mary Marie (Koontz) Arrington's Zellers-Sellers family history listed a Silem Sellers as a younger brother of the Elizabeth Sellers who is believed to be Hannah Henton's mother.
"Adding the fact that Jesse Henton was found in the two adjacent households in which this family lived in 1870 provides strong circumstantial evidence.
"Wake also quotes a book by Arthur B. Carpenter: "Carpenter-Zimmerman Familes of Rockingham County, Virginia, and Their Relations," which on Page 4 transcribes a letter from Fan (Carpenter) Zetty in which, as Wake notes "the operative word is missing" in the typed manuscript. Fan Zetty writes: "William married a daughter of Eben Hinton and had children: Sallie, Kate, Maggie, George, John and Harriet. He married a second time and his wife was the Jessie Hinton. The children were Mary, Fannie, Thomas, Edward, Debra, Andrew, Jacob and Columbia."2

The 1900 U. S. Census indicates that Hannah had eleven children with five still living. Names of eight are know. The living in 1900 are Hannah Mary Manerva Warner, Martha Frances Josephine, Edward Hinton, and Deliah May who I believe is enumerated with her husband John Jordan next to her brother Edward Carpenter, and perhaps Thomas Warner whom I have not found in the census records. This leaves three children unnamed.

Children of Joseph and Mary:

Narrative

It appears that Joseph is listed as James on the 1860 U. S. Census for Rockingham County, Virginia, although the age listed is about three years off. In the household are Mary Ann, Aminda, Margaret C., and James all at what appear to be the correct ages for the family of Joseph.

Joseph's obituary was in the Rockingham Register, 2 May 1890, page 3, column 7.

HENTON, At Taylor Springs, Va., April 6, 1890, of heart disease, Joseph T. Henton, aged 64 years and 8 days. He was laid to rest beneath the sod at Frieden's Church, on Wednesday evening in the presence of friends and relatives, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. A. C. McNeer, --There he slumbers in dreamless sleep, safe from the cares of live until the angelic host of heaven shall sing the glad song of a resurrections morn. He heeds not the rain that falls upon his grave, nor the snow that will lightly cover it; nor the flowers that will bloom around his tomb. His work is ended. Through dead, he still lives. He had been afflicted for a long time and his sufferings were unuterrable, but he never murmured one word that he thought the Lord had put too much on him. He said the Lord had always been good to him and that he had many things to be thankful for. He often called on the Lord for help to hear him through his suffering. His death was calm and peaceful. Fond friends look forward with hope to a re-union in that bright land where the sun never sets and funeral bells never toll. He leaves a wife and ten children to mourn his departure, three sons and seven daughters. One son and one daughter are in distance lands.
