Children of James and Nancy:

Narrative

James was also known as [Col.] James David Hinton.1

James David Hinton was the fifth born child in a family of ten children born to David Hinton and Anna Barbary Maddy. He was raised on the family farm in the Indian Creek community, near Greenville, Monroe County, Virginia (during the Civil War, this portion of Virginia was partitioned into the new state of West Virginia). During his youth, he enjoyed a rich family life, growing up in a community with several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He had one older brother, William (third born), and one younger brother, John Miller (eighth born), in addition to seven sisters. Just prior to the Civil War, James David Hinton was a student at Emery and Henry College in Emery, Virginia. (During the Civil War, this school was closed. The physical plant was used as a Confederate Field Hospital.)

During the Civil War, James David Hinton served with Lowry's Battery of Light Artillery in the Confederate army. Dr. Lowry was a young physician in Monroe County. Originally, his brigade was organized as 'Lowry's Centerville Rifles', and was later reorganized into a Light Artillery Brigade. James David Hinton enlisted with Lowry's Brigade during July 1862, and served with the unit until he was discharged at Charleston, West Virginia, nearly three years later. James David Hinton became a 'cannoneer', and participated in many campaigns and battles. The muster records show that his brother John was also a member of Lowry's Brigade; and that both James David and his brother John were treated in a military hospital during 1864.

After the Civil War, James David Hinton married Agnes Milburn and moved to Kansas. In Kansas, he was able to use his surveying skills to help survey the roadbeds for railroads (St. Joseph & Denver Railroad? - later, the Rock Island Railroad?), and to draw up the platt maps for the expansion of towns (such as Hamlin). James and Agnes bought a farm about 1.5 miles SW of Hamlin. They planted many fruit trees on their farm - people came from miles around to purchase fruit during the harvest seasons.

James David Hinton designed the Elementary School at Hamlin, Kansas, and several other buildings in Brown County, Kansas. Family records show that James and Agnes were living in Brown County in 1867 (this date may be erroneous; see wedding date of July 3, 1874, below). The family homestead was purchased in 1872. The first plat in Hamlin was recorded on August 15, 1870. The town prospered, and by 1875 the population had grown to 150. In 1889, James David Hinton attended a Confederate Army reunion in Old Virginia.

James David Hinton drew the plans for a new elementary school building for Hamlin in 1911. The plan featured central heating (from the basement), and indoor toilets. The building was in continuous service until 1964. The obituary of James David Hinton records that he was on the school board for 33 years, and signed the contracts for 150 teachers.1
