William and Jessie's oldest son, William James, was born in Oklahoma. After William Gardner's father was gored by a bull, the family moved back to Brown County, Kansas, and farmed the Hinton home place.      After William's brother, Franklin, died, his brother's property in Oklahoma was inherited by his mother, Agnes Hinton. When Agnes Hinton died, the Oklahoma property was acquired by William Gardner Hinton. Later, oil was discovered in Oklahoma, and the oil was produced from several wells on the (Frank Hinton) property in Oklahoma.

Major Life Events

James W. Bailey was born on 17 November 1872 at Greenville, Monroe Co., West Virginia.1,2 He married Nancy Moore.1 James was killed in an automobile accident in 1927 at rural Northfork, West Virginia. A clipping from an unidentified newspaper, supplied to Robert A. Hinton by Gayle Fischer, who had obtained a scrapbook of material about the Pocahontas Fuel Co., tells of the accident that took James Bailey's life, in great detail, with a four-deck headline:

"JAMES W. BAILEY KILLED WHEN CAR GOES OVER BANK
"Was General Manager of Stores for Pocahontas Fuel Company
     "TWO CARS STRUCK NEAR NORTHFORK
"Funeral Arrangements Not Yet Completed; Bailey Was Born in Monroe County, and Married Bluefield, Va., Girl, Miss Nancy Moore
"James W. Bailey, 55, Pocahontas, Va., general manager of stores for the Pocahontas Fuel company, was killed early last night when his automobile, sideswiping a passing automobile, was thrown over a 90-foot embankment between Northfork and Kyle tipple.
"The accident occurred at 6:52 o'clock. Mr. Bailey was dead when people reached his demolished automobile at the foot of the hill. Physicians who examined the body of the dead man expressed belief that he had sustained a broken neck. He was also crushed through the chest.
"The body was removed to the Wagner Undertaking establishment in Northfork, where it was prepared for burial. No funeral arrangements had been announced late last night.
"When car headed over the bank it is said to have turned over several times and went crashing down the steep slope, carrying the lone occupant to his tragic death.
"Mr. Bailey was returning to his home at Pocahontas from some of the Pocahontas Fuel company stores in the lower part of the field. As his car rolled on toward Northfork he was met on the road by Ernest W. Meade, of Bluefield, who is employed by the Standard Oil company. Meade was driving a Ford roadster and Bailey was driving a Ford touring car.
"Mr. Bailey's left front wheel struck Meade's rear left wheel, hooking it just enough to swing Bailey's machine from the south to the north side of the road and sending it on its death plunge down the steep embankment, according to available reports. Mr. Meade was able to hold his car in the road and prevent it from going down the hillside.
"Because of the popularity of the deceased man news of the tragic death traveled swiftly throughout the southern section of the state and into southwestern Virginia, where he was widely known and held in high esteem by a large circle of friends. Mr. Bailey was known to every traveling salesman who works the coal field trade and to numerous officials of concerns who sell the stores of the Pocahontas Fuel company, for which Mr. Bailey was principal buyer as well as general manager.
"He had been with the Pocahontas Fuel company for more that 25 years. He first became identified with the southern West Virginia coal fields during the early development of the lower field. He became general manager of stores for the Pocahontas Fuel company in 1907 and had served in this official capacity with considerable credit and much success and satisfaction to the company officials. Prior to going to Pocahontas Mr. Bailey had worked for the Pocahontas Fuel company as store manager at Maybeury and Switchback.
"He was known as a man of fair dealings and high morals. He was probably one of the best known men in the southern West Virginia coal fields. He had a very pleasing personality, fine disposition and made friends wherever he went. While not a member of any particular church his faith leaned toward the Methodist. He was a member of the Pocahontas Masonic lodges, Kazim temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Roanoke, Va., and Bluefield No. 265 B.P.O. Elks.
"Mr. Bailey was a native of Monroe county and was born November 17, 1872, at Greenville. When just a youth he became identified with the development of the coal industry of southern West Virginia. His parents preceded him to the grave.
"Mr. Bailey married Miss Nancy Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Moore, of Bluefield, Va. Besides his widow he is survived by three children, James Bailey, Jr., Eleanor Easley Bailey and Elizabeth Haller Bailey, all of Pocahontas. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Brown Wagner, of Blen Rogers, W. Va.".1,2
