Narrative

     James joined the Confererate Army 17 June 1861. He became a prisoner of war May 1864 at Point Lookout and was transported by boat to New York on 3 August 1864. By train he was taken to Elmire Prison in New York and was discharged from prison in June 1865. He wrote his memoirs in a book entitled Ups and Downs of a Confederate Soldier.2

     Obituary of George H. Henton: George Harrison Henton, 99, of 1617 S. Main Street, Harrisonburg died early Thursday morning at his home.
     Mr. Henton was born NOv. 16, 1887, at Melrose and was a son of the late John William and Alberta Florence West Henton.
     He was a truck driver and had last worked for Wilson Trucking.
     He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Brotherhood Sunday School Class.
     on Sept. 22, 1909, he married the former Mable Neck, who died in 1952.
     Surviving are a son, George E. Henton of Harrisonburg; two daughters, Gladys Falls and Mary E. Henton, both of Harrisonburg; a brother Woodley Henton of Charlottesville; 21 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
     The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg by the Revs. Millard Floyd and O. H. Burton. Burial will be in Fellowship United Methodist Church Cemetery at Melrose.
     The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today.5

     Conflicting evidence states that Arthur Woodley Henton was born on 11 March 1897 at Rockingham Co., Virginia.1

     Arthur was also known as [Rev.] Arthur Woodley Henton.1

     Obituary of Arthur W. Henton: The Rev. Arthur Woodley Henton, 93, of Charlottesville and formerly of Rockingham County, died Sept. 30, 1990, in a Charlottesville nursing home.
     Mr. Henton retired in 1963 as a United Methodist minister.
     He was born at the Melrose community north of Harrisonburg March 3, 1897, and was a son of the late John William and Florence Alverta West Henton.
     His wife, Ruth Proffitt Henton, died earlier.
     The closest survivors are a nephew and a niece.
     The Rev. Gerald P. Coleman will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville. Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery at Free Union, Va.
     The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.2

     Lida Mary Henton was born on 7 July 1903 at Rockingham Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4 Lida died on 13 January 1982 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Rockingham Co., Virginia, at age 78.5 She was interred at Fellowship United Methodist Church Cemetery at Rockingham Co., Virginia.5

Narrative

     Lida M. Henton obituary: Lida Mary Henton, 78, of the Melrose area at Rt. 2, Harrisonburg died Tuesday morning at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
     Ms. Henton was born Juy 7, 1903, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late John W. and Florence West Henton.
     She graduated from James Madison University in 1929 and Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music at Dayton in 1933.
     She worked for the U.S. Census Bureau in Washington, D.C., and later taught school in Augusta, Rockingham and Shenandoah counties and the city of Covington before retiring 13 years ago.
     Ms. Henton was a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church and the church's adult Bible class.
     Surviving are two brothers, G. Harrison Henton of Mount Crawford and the Rev. A. W. Henton of Free Union, Va.
     The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Fellowship United Methodist Church near Melrose by the Rev. M. Lee Ramsey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
     The body is at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home, where friends may call.
     In lieu of flowers, the family asked that contributions be made to either the adult Sunday school class of Fellowship United Methodist Church, in care of Wilma White, Rt. 3, Harrisonburg or the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 212, Harrisonburg.5
