Narrative

     In 1340 a fourth part of the manor of Sowerby was settled by Robert de Washington the elder and Agnes his wife upon Robert de Washington the younger and Margaret his wife. This is probably the same fourth part held by Robert Lawrence in 1450, the tenure being of the king as duke by rent of a grain of pepper.2

     1374, Thomas de Thwenge held at his death the service of Robert de Wessington, who held of him 4 tenements in Rotheworthe by knight's sevice and for the rent of a sparrowhawk or 12d. yearly; Ing. p.m., 28 Edward III (1), n. 68. Inquest taken in 31 Edward III (1357) touching land called Routheworth in the vill of Helsyngton alienated by Margaret de Ros (d. early in January 1307) without the king's licence to Robert de Wassyington. The pleadings in a suit coram Rege in 1374 state that Joan daughter of Walter de Strikland, knt., married Robert de Wassyngton and had issue Robert de Wassyngton, son and heir, father of Robert de Wassyngton, who recovers the tenement in Helsington against the king; Coram Rege R., Trinity, 48 Edward III, 2nd pt. m. 19. The first Robert de Wessington died before 18 August, 1324, seised of a moiety of the manor of Kernesford (Carnforth) held jointly with Joan his wife wife, who survived, by the feoffment of Walter de Dtrikelannde to them in tail, to hold of the king, as earl of Lancaster, by homage and service of 2½d. for ward of Lancaster castle and for one twenty-fourth fee; Robert de Wessington, aged 28 and more, was his next heir; Cal. Inq., VI, 3573.

     In 1357 Nicholas son of Thomas Brown of Carnforth demanded against John son of Robert de Washington a messuage and land in Carnforth. John de Washington and Joan his wife in 1382 made a settlement of lands in Carnforth and other places, the remainder being to the right heirs of Joan.4

Narrative

     The Brus moiety of Carnforth was held by the Stricklands of Sizergh, by one of whom it was given to Robert de Washington who had married Joan, daughter of William de Strickland. The Washington's were farmers of the other moiety, and thus by one title or the other held the whole manor. This later descended to their successors the Lawrences and by inheritance to Gilbert Gerard by right of his wife. In 1312 Robert de Washington and Joan his wife settled messuages and lands in Carnforth on their son Robert and Agnes his wife. After Robert's death in 1324 it was found that he and Joan his wife were jointly seised of a moiety of the manor of Carnforth by grant of Walter de Strickland; it was held of the king as of the earldom of Lancaster by the twenty-fourth part of a knight's fee and 2 and ½d. for castle ward. The moiety was worth in easements, etc., 6d. only, because it had been wasted by the Scots. In demense were 40 acres of arable land, 6 acres of meadow and the moiety of a water mill. The heir was their son Robert Washington, age 28.5

     1320, William de Thweng demised to farm to Roger de Kerneteby, vicar of the church of Kirkeby in Kendal the manor of Helsington with the park, as Robert de Washington sometime held it by demise of Marmaduke de Thweng, his father, to hold for 13 years from Martinmas, 1320 for 7 m. for first 6 years and 8 m. for last 7 years. The grantor to find timber in Hay for building a new oxhouse and repairing the old grange which is falling inot ruin. Witnesses: Patrick de Culwen, Roger de Bronolfesheved, knights; Robert de Washington, Thomas de Levenes, Roland de Patton; Reg. of D. at Levens, ii, f. 62 d.6

     1288, William de Stirkeland son of Sir Robert de Stirkeland knt., grants to John called of the Chamber (de Camera) and Sibyl his wife his land in Le Howys with 3 acres of land and meadow near Le Killinbek, which Alice de Howys holds for life with reversion to the said John and Sibyl, lying between Kent and the way extending towards Levenys, beginning on the eastern side next the demesne land of dame Margaret de Ros [and extending] near Le Killin bek westward as the arable land and wastes divide, in ascending to a certain old hay, as the arable land and waste divide, and folloing the said hay unto Kent; to hold for a race of ginger at Christmas.
