Major Life Events

Pepin was born in 767.2 Pepin died between 811 and 813.2

Narrative

Pepin was eldest but illegitiimate son of Charlemagne. He was normally proportioned with attractive features but had a spinal deformity from which his nickname was derived. He was never likely to inherit the Frankish domains due to his deformity and illegitimacy. However, Charles treated his son well giving him preference over his younger brothers. He was amiable and well-liked among the members of Charles' court. In 780 Charles formally disinherited Pepin and had the pope baptize his third son, Carloman, who now received the name Pepin which was had a special significance as Pepin had been a recurring name in the Carolingian dynasty. Pepin remained in court and remained a popular friend of discontented nobles and in 792 was convinced to play the figurehead in the nobles rebellion. They had planned to kill Charles, his wife Hildegarde, and his three sons by her. The scheme nearly succeeded but a Lombard deacon named Fardulf exposed it. The conspirators were tried at Regensburg and all found guilty of high treason and executed. Charles however spared Pepin and forced him to enter a monastery at Prüm to live out the rest of his life as a monk.3

Major Life Events

Narrative

The family fell into dispute with the Royal family after the rejection of George's daughter Elizabeth by David Stewart, eldest son of King Robert III, in favor of a daughter of the Earl of Douglas. This focussed the rivalry between the Dunbars and the powerful Douglases. George supported the English against the Scots at the battle of Homildon Hill (14 September 1402) and also supported Henry IV of England at the battle of Shrewsbury. His son played a low profile and appeared to be on good terms with King James I but the King used the excuse of the treason to forfeit the earldoms.2
