FatherRichard Rose1 b. c 1698, d. 1765
MotherUnknown ?
Relationship5th great-granduncle of Paul Edward Lawrence

Major Life Events

Robert Rose was born before 1737.1 He married Frances Jones. Robert died circa 1820.2

Children of Robert and Frances:

Narrative

Robert was first mentioned in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, in a 1758 deed. He has not been found in any Virginia records. Robert settled in North Carolina about 25 miles east of where Burwell Rose would live in Nash County.3

An Elizabeth Rose was mentioned in the 1756 will of Mary Grey, widow of William Grey of Surry Co., Virgina, as granddaughter. Researchers have thought this to be the Elizabeth that was mentioned as having released her interest in a tract of land sold by John Rose Sr. in Bute County, North Carolina, in 1770. Carl York in his article on Lt. Hosea Rose that appeared in the Tennessee Ancestors, questions that assumption. The Grays of Surry County, Virginia, were substantial, land-owning families and it would seem likely that they would assist their children in getting a start in life. John Rose Sr. was married for more than 20 years before he owned land and had been in financial shortfall while living in Virginia. If he had married Elizabeth Gray it would seem that the Gray family would have assisted the Rose family in those early years. According to Carl York a better candidate for the husband of Elizabeth Gray might be Robert Rose, brother of John Rose Sr. The first mention of Robert Rose was the 1758 Edgecombe County, North Carolina, deed detailing his purchase of land -- this by a man whose father was not in the land-owning class. It would be safe to assume that Robert's marriage may have been the event that permitted him to purchase land. The name of Robert's wife never appears in any document. While not conclusive this does raise the question as to whether Elizabeth Gray was John Rose Sr.'s wife or the wife of his brother Robert.4

Given the wide range of birth dates for his children Robert may have been married more than once.
