Children of John and Alice:

Narrative

John married Imogene Whitely in 1915 after divorcing Alice for desertion. On the 1920 census he was listed with Imogene with a Gordon age 13 and Raymond Hill age 11 listed as sons who would have been born before the marriage. Neither of these sons appear on the 1910 census with John and his first wife Alice. Also on the 1920 census in the same dwelling separate family appeared Jessie and Lella Whiteley parents of Imogene. William Corn in his manuscript on the descendants of John Hill and Margaret Covington states that John and Imogene had no children. Could Gordon and Raymond be children that were adopted by John and Imogene after their marrage? I have been unable to find further information on these two children.

On the 1940 U. S. Census in the household of Thomas Clifton Blessing are Jane Norman Hill age 9 (daughter), Ada Hooper Hill age 74 (mother), Charles M. Pilkerton age 18 (step-son), and Lucky V. Pilkerton age 14 (step-son). These are actually James Norman Hill (son of Ernest Edward Hill and Hallie), Ada Hooper Hill (mother of Ernest Edward Hill) and Charles M. Pilkerton and Lucky V. Pilkerton (sons of Lucky V. Pilkerton, a son of Ada Hooper Hill by her marriage to Aaron Pilkerton) and either are recorded incorrectly with the wrong family or they were actually staying with the Blessing family and the relationships are recorded incorrectly. I can find no relationship between the Blessing family and either the Hill or Pilkerton families.
