Major Life Events

Anderson N. Leigh was born on 2 December 1844 at Orange Co., North Carolina.2,1,3,4,5,6 He married first Leantine R. Pope on 4 August 1867 at Orange Co., North Carolina.7,8 He married second Janette A. Leigh.9 He married third Ludie ?.10 Anderson died on 15 November 1898 at Durham, Durham Co., North Carolina, at age 53.2,1 He was interred at Leigh Family Cemetery at Durham Co., North Carolina.2

Narrative

Anderson was also known as York or Yank.

Anderson enlisted in 2nd Company G (Orange Light Artillery), 40th Regiment North Carolina Troops (3rd Regiment North Carolina Artillery) in Orange County on February 4, 1863. He was present or accounted for until he was transferred to Company E, 13th Battalion North Caroina Artillery. He was present or accounted for through February 1865. He was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, on April 27, 1865.

Anderson (also known as York or Yank) married Leantine R. Pope on 1867, and was listed with her on the 1870 U. S. Census. On the 1880 U. S. Census he was listed with wife Janetta (Nettie) so it appears that either Leantine died or they were divorced. It also appears that Anderson and Leantine had no children. Janetta is believed to be the daughter of Spencer Leigh and his wife Sallie. I do not know the relationship, if any, between Anderson and Spencer.

Janetta died in September of 1897 and Anderson died a year later in November of 1898. However, I believe that Anderson may have married a third wife during that last year. On the 1900 U. S. Census in Durham County a Ludie Leigh, widow, was listed with five step-children whom I believe are children of Anderson and Janetta. The two youngest of those children, Nannie and Foye, are again listed as niece and nephew on the 1910 U. S. Census in the household of Leo W. Leigh (a brother of Anderson) and his family. Additionally the death certificated of Nannie list her parents as Yank Leigh and Nettie Couch. It may have been possible that Janetta (Nettie) had a first husband with the surname of Couch for a short period of time before marrying Anderson. She was age 31 on the 1880 census and apparently married Anderson sometime in the 1870s so she could have had a previous marriage.

Anderson apparently had the nickname of York or Yank. I'm not sure which is correct as either could easily be mistaken for the other in the handwritting of that period.2
